Use resources whenever you can, but try not to use copyrighted images and stuff like that, unless you know it's free to use. Study good stamps to see what makes them "good," and try to add a little pizzaz; plain text on a plain background usually looks pretty plain. Try adding your own images or stock textures if you need to do so.
=DoItForTheLulz makes some pretty good stamps and templates that are free to use, so take a look through his gallery if it strikes your fancy. :3
He does have a rather abrasive sense of humor though, so take caution of that ^ ^;
