It...no longer resembles the subject at all. *cries* So I gave up, cause I'm sick of staring at this failure and the ref pic.The top image is the final(?) greyscale. The lower left is the initial attempt (not using ref for shading). The lower right is fixing initial attempt (using photo ref).
I think this is the first time I attempt painting in greyscale digitally. It was diff from using charcoal, but I still ended up going dark and heavy on contrast. Habits are hard to break no matter which medium, I guess.

Done in Sketchbook Pro 2011 SP2 using Wacom Intuos3 tablet.
Reference used: Scan of old small photo.
Time taken: 2 hrs for drawing, 5-6 hr for greyscale.
