It repeated over and over in Wyn’s mind. In the moment, there had been too much going on for her to contemplate the command that Martin had given Spud, but with the danger long gone and the dark safety of the tent and warm cot the strangeness of it truly sunk in.

Wyn wasn’t what could be classified as a sports fanatic, but she had always taken a vested interest in her health and her pursuit of exercise had led her to play a number of sports when she’d been in school.

...And from what she could recall, ‘Turtwig’ was hockey slang that essentially meant ‘duck and cover’. Which is exactly what Spud had done.

It could have been coincidence. It could have been anything, really. As she lay in her bed puzzling over the word Martin had chosen to shout, Wyn was reminded she knew next to nothing about her friend’s life before being marooned on a treacherous island far from civilization. For all she knew as child Martin might have owned a Turtwig and the situation with Spud had thrown him back in time.

Still, it was such an oddity.

She clicked her tongue and Buck came over to her in the dark, putting his muzzle into her hand as she reached out. She scratched his head, then patted the cot to invite him up with her. He took her up on the offer and snuggled right in. Wyn put an arm over his furry side and tried her best to let herself relax into sleep.

Her last conscious thought before drifting off was how much Spud’s hard head looked like a hockey mask.
