I have this really random theory about the Lich, okay, so we know how he and Finn are incarnations of the ultimate good and evil; but what's bugging me is, How did he get that crown he's always wearing? Technically it means he should be called The Lich King.
We also that in Ooo, before there was anything, there were monsters, so what if The Lich was the first of them, the most powerful monster, hence his crown. Just my take on how he got that crown but what do I know?

Also, considering a lich is a wizard or royal who became undead in a quest for immortality, that should give you some insight into his origin

And besides, the kingship (or at least rulership, assuming it's not for show) is implied in his crown already
