Description This was taken on Short Island, near the jumpingpin bar, between North and South Stradbroke (QLD).

It is from my first role of film taken on an SLR, the camera is an old RICOH with no light metering (yay).

Any pointers are appreciated.

Cropping, borders, brightness/contrast done in GIMP.

(Help with any decisions, telling me what I should do and scanning thanks to Ben, @newklear )

i think the silhouette of the tree added to the softness of the entire composition gives it this paintery feeling. Feels pretty calm, warm and soothing at the same time. it really is a great shot, bravo.

I think that cropping out that white thing in the right might make the picture look even better than it already is but for the first try with an SLR camera this is very well done!

I'd like to see the shot composed a litlte more to the left, to cut out the white building, while keeping the tree off-centre. And like Sara said, maybe a little more contrast. But I really like the little flare from the sun.

Great work for a first-time effort.

beautiful composition. I love the way the sun peeks through the leaves just a tad. I wish the contrast was a bit sharper though so the trees looked more sillouetted. It would look more eyepopping then. Wonderful shot though..very serene..quiet..

Ben and his long comments aye...
this is really good though, the way the sun is radiating from behind the tree is very well captured...the sky has an interesting colour.
very nice indeed
the cropping and border and stuff sets it off really well

First thing I noticed when you first showed me the actual print of this photo was the way the sun burns out from behind the tree, causing a "fire" or an aura of some sort around the tree, hence me suggesting "A Fire Inside..." at the title. I think that is what really sets the tone for a nicely taken photo, simple and unique in it's structure. Also, that "burning" of the sky (Caused by a slightly longer exposure I'm assuming) has caused a nice spectrum accross the sky, ranging through purples, vivid yellows and nicely toned pinks. That is one aspect of it I love

As for the construction and cropping, there isn't anything I can complain about, because as you know, it's exactly how I would have done it myself. Also, the field of focus you've got is lovely, I'm guessing you were on the f11 for this? (I know you probably don't even remember, but that's the way it looks ) Really fades into the distance nicely, and sets your eyes right on the subject well.

All in all princess, I cannot detract from this image one bit. It's gorgeous, simple, lush, and definantly signal that you do have some sort of talent for photography. I certainly hope this isn't your last photographic endevour, because this is by far one of my favorite photos I've seen in a long time. +fav babe
