"I was what you are. You will be what I am."

As supreme leader of the Holorian Grand Army and powerful mage, Lord-Commander Balder all but demands respect and power. Ambitious men are drawn to his influence like moths to a flame, but only a few lucky ones get taken under his wing. Alwen got his favour, and is determined to keep it - much to Balder's delight.

The first inktober 2018 piece! Chances are that I will not finish the full challenge, but I'll give it a shot nonetheless. The OC-T is my main art-related priority still.Β

Their relationship is so fascinating to me! It's so interesting to get to learn more about the two of them and how they interact. I bet Balder would be a really interesting one to do for OCT sometime...

The composition of this piece is fantastic! I love how ominous Balder is and how relaxed Al is, even though he KNOWS he's in a dangerous position.Β

I wished I had time to do Inktober this year, but it didn't end up happening. NaNoWriMo has started now and I am participating, but I'll be lucky if I get halfway done lol. Why are all the fun challenges always during school and when I am the busiest??? Haha I'm sure you can relate

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy them. I don't think I'll enroll Balder - maybe in some far-off future - as he's one of my better developed characters. It's nice he piqued your interest though!

Again, thanks for your kind words! Al's a firm believer of 'the student eventually surpasses the master', but he has a long way to go before he just might.

Good luck with NaNoWriMo as well as school! Uni's tough, but with a bit of determination and tears we'll get through it.

Honestly all of your characters pique my interest Its always so exciting to see who you might enroll next!

Any ideas for next round? I pretty much have no idea at this point. I think I might go with a completely new story and character actually.Β

Thank you! I'm thrilled to hear that still!

I'm also out of ideas, in all truth. I'm wondering whether I should enroll Ibra (a friend of Minne's), or maybe I can't believe I'm saying thisΒ Kaida after all - she'd definitely be a challenge when it comes to playing with my narrative and concealing possible spoilers.

I may also go with a completely different story - I think you found an old drawing somewhere at the back of my gallery depicting The Viking Band "TrollBeatz", and I'm tempted to enroll one of my Very Cool Anachronistic Viking Characters. It's a less serious story than Caleb's Story (understatement of the year, which only just started), and I kind of feel up for a little light-heartedness.

What is your new story about? The pink-haired girl?

Drayah In reply to MegaMaeve [2019-06-21 18:01:36 +0000 UTC]

I think for a future round it would be fantastic to see a new story from you, especially a light hearted one. But I'm also super duper invested in Caleb's story so every new bit of lore and every new character I get from it excites me greatly! And you didn't even go with one of the characters you were considering for this round. I have yet to go through your OCT tasks and read and comment, but don't worry I will and I am very excited about it!

I wasn't very invested in Penelope this round, I wanted to enroll her because I was going to make a graphic novel about her for my capstone but then I ended up being dissatisfied with the story and switched to something completely different. I'm just finishing out the round with her because I want to finish what I started but I'm not at all invested in her world. So picking a new story did not work out for me here.Β

Next time I might go with Nadasa's story again because I'm already very invested there. Or Golden Sun because it's been forever since that one got any attention. Pink haired girl's story is probably not ready for OCT yet and if I did her then it would probably turn out like Penelope, where I wasn't invested enough. It's hard to pick though.Β

I love this to bits!!! From the layout and evocative placement of the characters to the thought-provoking quote! The words make me think of the relationship between these two characters, of how they share similarities but their relationship is tensioned and there's always a game of power and influence that they play. I wonder what more it hides, if it refers to a moment in Al's future...

I love your technique in ink - it's so complex and minutely executed! The stippling and the hatching are spot on, they create texture and depth and make the characters stand out wonderfully! What is the meaning of the rune at the bottom of the page? I recognize it from the set of Ancient Runes.

Thank you very much! I keep on smiling whenever I read this comment of yours - thank you for your praise and your striking description of the relationship between Balder and Al. Β

The quote seemed befitting of Balder's intentions of grooming Al to be one of his most useful pawns in his game, and of Al's intentions to take Balder's place once he gets the chance. It does refer to a moment in Al's future - and the rune('s temporary name) is Ama, "circle, cycle" or "an ending, a start". (I'm still working on a tiny comprehensive guide, which I may put in my Setting Guide at some point, once Minne's round is over, maybe. ^^)

Again, thank you! Ink is my personal favourite media, and I'm having a blast experimenting with different hatching styles! ^^

That...is a very big man. O.O'...

I wonder what things Al picked up from this man other then mere training.... e.e

MegaMaeve In reply to LordCherryPaw [2018-10-17 05:54:20 +0000 UTC]

That, he is! Although Balder and Al are not on scale in this piece (rather, they're only posed symbolically), Balder is 1.96m (as opposed to Al, who is 1.74), which makes him the tallest character from my story. ^^

Al's personal story very much is about the things he learns from Balder, and about how much exactly he'll have to pay for both gaining and using this knowledge - we'll have to wait for the story to unfold to figure out just how much he'll pick up on. Thanks for your interest!

Thank you very much! I'm glad you like this style so far! I'm enjoying these little experiments immensely myself (and hope to incorporate some of the things I'm learning in my more regular style, too)
