le 22 julliet 2008 (Happy 7th Anniversary to me and Nic! <3)Done in crayon, oil pastel and permanent marker.
This is a prize for *Moony92 , who tied for third in the fanart section of ~SweetestIrony 's June contest. Technically, she's not entitled to a colored picture unless she places first, but this is a good old fashioned example of favoritism. That's right, kids, I sometimes treat my good friends better than perfect strangers so deal with it. I can't post this on the group anyway since she didn't ask for anything involving Gohan and/or Videl.
In any event, dearest *Moony92 asked for a "sweet" Zutara pic and, me being the moment-spoiler that I am, came up with a funny version of what she wanted. If you can't tell, Katara has given Zuko an "Atomic FireBall," which is technically candy, but very hot. Zuko, apparently unaware of this, ate it and suffered the side effects, hehe. Ironic, yes?
In case you can't read my crappy handwriting, here's what Katara is thinking:
"Maybe I should offer him some water...<3" ('cuz she's a water element, 'n all.)
This is my very first time drawing either one of these characters, so I apologize to any of you "Zutara" fans if there are any mistakes in costume, color, characterization...whatever. I'll do better next time (assuming there IS a next time, of course).
Btw, I've just gotten into Avatar myself and, so far, am quite enjoying it. The only thing I can't understand is how Zuko and Katara end up with other people when they're clearly the favorite pairing amongst fans
(Besides that, I saw the finale the other night and in one scene Zuko actually throws himself between Katara and a nasty-looking lightning blast. And yet they BOTH end up making out with someone else at the end? I totally don't get it) I'd say that this is the first time that I've ever seen an alternate pairing totally pwn all canon couples in a fandom before. Way to break the mold, Zutarians! Hehe. Tell me what you think (unless you hate it, in which case keep it to yourself, hehe)!

Can you believe the creators would do something as sick and evil as to put teasers throughout the entire movie? Obviously, there's going to be a sequel (Zuko's mother's location), but if you watch the entire series, you'll notice that the build-up for Kataang doesn't seem to be as developed as it would be for Zutara. That especially applies to ZukoMei.
I love the colors in your picture that's always my favorite part of your drawings. It looks so smooth.

Nice one, Mary! I'm a huge fan of Avatar and kinda used to be a Zutarian. I still favor that particular pairing over the others on the show for some reason, but at one point I just didn't care anymore
Aanyways, for being your first time drawing these two characters, it's quite well done. Although Katara's hair loopies are kinda big

I'm still barely getting my feet wet in the Avatar series/fandom, but I pretty much like Zutara best. The canon pairings just don't make much sense to me...it's like they come out of left field, or something.

Well, the canon pairings didn't really come out of no where. You have to watch all of the episodes (especially season 2) for the canon pairings to start making sense. It wasn't until season 3 that they started kissing scenes, but the first Mai and Zuko kissing scene came out of no where! I mean, we only had tiny hints of Mai liking Zuko, and then BAM, they kissed. It was weird.
Aang and Katara had a little bit more development. But even their relationship was...fast-paced, I suppose you could say.
Once Zuko joined, 'Team Avatar' there started to be a few more hints at Zutara. Their pairing was really appealing because they started out hating each other to becoming caring comrades. I think they had the most promise of an actual relationship. Especially the finale scenes! There were SOO many Zutara scenes which made it strange to see the canon pairings making out in the end!
I say you are good at drawing male characters. You have Gohan and Zuko down pretty well. Of course, you also have Videl and Katara drawn nicely too. I guess it's just a matter of opinion...besides, we're all our own worst critics
Oh, and by the way, have you finished beta-ing the second part of The Path of Our Tomorrows? There's no rush or anything, just asking to see if you haven't forgotten ^^

I saw a bit of Kataang early on in the series, but it still had something of a friendship vibe...maybe I just haven't seen enough, though. Or maybe little bald kids just aren't my thing, I dunno, hehe.
Isn't it funny how they stumble across an absolutely wonderful pairing while they butcher their attempts at canon romance?

Well there's also something else to consider. Zuko is the prince of the Fire Nation and his people will expect him to marry a Fire Nation noble. The Water Tribe will still distrust the Fire Nation despite their best efforts at peace, so Katara and Zuko getting together would be a bit impossible. Then again, Avatar is technically a kid's show so if they did get together then the producers wouldn't introduce such a problem. It can go either way I suppose
Like I said, we're all our own worst critics ^^ You can hate your work as much as you like, but I still think you did a great job

OR, it could be seen as a way to make peace between the nations. S'long as they keep themselves segregated, they'll never understand one another. I think it would be a great political move to join the water and fire nations together.
I didn't actually say that I hated it, I said I wasn't comfortable with drawing men yet

Well, if we're going to be speaking of political moves, wouldn't it be wiser to join the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom together? Technically speaking, the Fire Nation did more damage to the Earth Kingdom than the Water Tribes, so to keep the peace amongst the two nations it would be wiser to join them through marriage instead.
Yeah, it can go any way. Many Zutara bashers think it isn't possible, but it technically can be. Besides, pairings don't necessarily need to be possible to the fandom, just plausible.

You could be right. I haven't seen enough of the series to properly counter that. Still, I'm not sure that a marriage between Earth and Fire would be such a good idea early on since there are bound to be more animosity between them. Just think of the political upheaval in the Earth kingdom...might start another war, or something. Then again, maybe I'm just too sleepy to think straight at the moment...pardon
Ah, yes, very true. Possibility is meaningless; it's plausibility that keeps us alternate pairing fans going. Just because it WON'T happen, doesn't mean it absolutely couldn't.

I don't think anyone really gets the post-lightning make-outs, not even the Katara/Aang and Mai/Zuko shippers, even if they claim to.
You know, the first part of the shipping war may be over (for the most part), but we're still accepting new recruits, if you'd like to hop aboard the S.S. Zutara...

As a newbie myself, I was utterly confused over them. Seriously, until they started locking lips with other people, I thought they were a canon couple @@ I was practically convinced of it during the fight scene I mentioned in my notes...
Though I loathe to take sides in any 'ship war (*shudder*), I'd have to say that I'm probably in the Zutara army already. Thank *Moony92 for subliminally implanting them in my subconscious before I even watched a single episode of Avatar, hehe. Besides, they make more sense than the other canon pairings.
