Don't let the beach-bum attitude fool you. Beneath that laid-back, 'don't harsh my mellow, bruh' appearance there is a fun-loving, competitive personality who loves nothing more than to bet you he can kick your ass in a race. Don't get me wrong, he does like lounging about like a beached whale, but more often than not he'd rather be doing something than lazing around. He gets his work ethic from his father, a grizzled hunter with a world-weary view, dedicated to service to his herd. He's instilled as much of that in Nik as he could, but there's only so much he can hammer into that wandering mind.

He can focus, especially on his job, where he has had an encounter with a hungry shark previously, but occasionally will goof off. He enjoys the fun things in life- spinning wildly on warm currents, turning schools of fleeing fish into rapidly changing living sculptures, and sightseeing the local reefs and all their splendor.

When it comes to interacting with others, he's the fun-loving older brother everyone wishes they had. He'll spin wild stories of adventure and intrigue, totally encourage and accompany you to that old dropoff that you probably shouldn't be going to, and help you play hookie from your education, and then lie helpfully to your parents when the two of you get caught. Nik is a great friend, and an excellent shoulder to lean or or ear to lend when things are rough. He's a bit like both of his parents in that way.

Appearance:

Nik is a sleek, well-muscled machine made for the water! His coat is short, sleek, and waterproof quite like a seal's would be. In rain, water beads on it and rolls off. He possesses both air-breathing lungs and water-breathing gills, so he's functional both on land and in water, though the latter is where he thrives. In addition to having the body of a horse, Nik has cephalic fins and the 'wings' (pectoral fins) of a ray, in addition to a dorsal fin and pelvic fins to propel him through the water and provide excellent cornering and agility. His tail is long and whiplike, just like a ray's, and possesses a single barb for defense.

History:
The first born son of the conservative gatherer, Anahera, and fierce hunter, Nikora, Nik grew up in a tightly-knit community of mixed hunters and gatherers, with a large group of friends. His childhood was uneventful, although he seemed to prove himself quite a little troublemaker in his youth, often finding trouble (though he, to this day, claims trouble always found him!)

As he started to grow and show great promise in both speed and agility, his father began to groom him in an effort to curb that youthful troublemaking- er, enthusiasm! As a colt, Nik often wandered and daydreamed, much to the chagrin of his gruff, no-nonsense father. His mother fostered this love of the ocean, and helped turn Nik's rebellious streak to a spiritual one, weaving him tales of their history, passed down to her by her own mother, and teaching him of their Gods and the herd's beginnings. He latched onto these tales, and holds her teachings and words very close to his heart.

At the beginning of his third year, as Hihiri herdmembers do, Nik attended his Vigil. The entire experience, although a test of his endurance, strength, and will was one he remembers fondly. He received his ranking within the herd as a hunter, as well as a vision of his spirit animal- a giant oceanic ray!

He was also around for the (re)discovery of the fabled Wakainga, and often uses the ruins of the city as a place to clear his head and meditate... or scare the pants off of his younger siblings on occasion! Overall, he is very close to both of his parents (and his many younger siblings), and is grateful to them for helping shape him into the stallion he is today. He fosters a loving, if slightly antagonistic, relationship with his father, who tolerates his nonsense to a degree. The elder stallion still has much to teach his young son, and will continue to do so.
