Where in Indonesia can you drive them?  Is there open ground for them to travel across?  And Germany upgraded their Leopard 1s because the Abrams were finally cleaning up on the tank competitions after replacing the M60.

Indonesia is pretty big country actually, New Guinea and Borneo is 2nd and 3rd biggest island. Sumatra is bigger than Japan's main island and Java not that small either.

The problem is mobilizing the tanks between islands I suppose, we'll need more and better transport ships than current ones haha.

As for their use, I'm not sure either. In Java they'll probably be used in urban warfare I guess. I'm of the opinion that we should boost up our maritime power more instead of the land based ones, but I guess you can't just satisfy one side, the other ones need their toys too haha

My question is:  Who would you use it against?  I would believe you would need something smaller, something along the lines of an Infantry Fighting Vehicle, preferably a wheeled variety.

I don't know what industrial capabilities Indonesia has, but something made in-house to meet the military's needs would be what's needed.  Maybe talk with Singapore Industries for suggestions.

Your country made a good decision.
The only thing i read about these is that they survive those selfmade mines.

This might be the best overall tank there is. Very similar to our M1a1 here in the U.S. but with an engine that isn't as thirsty as the Abrams.
You portfolio is fantastic by the way.

Love the detail and accuracy. I am a German Tanker and I was one of the few soldiers present when the Vice Defense Minister from Indonesia and several Generals came to watch the tanks in action.

Wait. Really? Indonesia getting Leo 2A6s?

Got a source on that since that is news to me.

Anyway I wouldn't be counting any possible sale as a sure thing. Specially if it comes to tanks. I've heard the german government is being sued by the opposition regarding the possible sale of the newer Leopard 2A7+ to Saudi Arabia.
Now, I'm not comparing Indonesia with Saudi Arabia, but the opposition groups in Germany are fiercely opposed to major weapon deal to countries in the east. And they are willing to go to justice to either stop such deals from occuring, or at least stall them as long as possible.

Anyway that's the politics.

This model is awesome. The accuracy of it is excellent and the quality is concurring with that only pros in 3-D modelling can achieve.

In addition to that, the Leo 2A6 is the closest design to my favourite Leopard 2 variant, the Leopard 2A6EX (Although is has not met sales for the German Bundeswehr).

I love it. Keep up the good work.

Panzerfire In reply to Siregar3D [2011-11-27 23:09:08 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh thanks a lot for the share.

Hmmm so the idea is to obtain second hand equipment with a life expectancy of at least 20 years. Sounds reasonable. However I don't know if Leopards 2A6 will be available for sale from retiring stock of the German Army, I'd think it'd be easier to get brand new ones. However there may still be some older 2A4s ready to be sold, Germany has been getting rid of those for quite a while in exchange of 2A6s. The 2A5s may also be made available for sale soon but I wouldn't put my bets on it.

The German Army is more likely to keep the 2A6s for itself hoping to continiously upgrade them for a long while. For example, Many of the 2A6s will be upgraded to the 2A7 standars in the coming years. Any remaining 2A6 will probably be made available for sale when a new Leopard variant is manufactured. Work on the design of a "Leopard 3" should begin within the next 5-10 years

Now, I don't know if other countries such as the Netherlands, Greece, Spain (All 2A6s variants user) have plans to sell their tanks but I can tell you that at least from Germany, any exports made from 2A6 variants or upgraded versions will come as a sale of brand new equipment instead of second hand equipment. At least that has been the rule so far.

I can only find Indonesian sources so yeah, probably not 100% confirmed, it's just one reason to do the 3d model haha

Anyway if they do come I'll be glad, the army) really needs to renew its aging assets, we still have some WW2 era stuff lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Panzerfire In reply to MeganeRid [2011-11-27 23:44:49 +0000 UTC]

The source thingie has been taken care by Siregar so no problem.

And WW2 era stuff? Yeah that would strike me as an indication of a very needed upgrade

So far I read from Siregar's sources, it seems the plan is get about a 100 units. Sounds like a good number. Not too many to make the neighbours uneasy, and not too few either.

But yeah, Indonesia is not a nation very suitable for armored warfare. Large portions of territory separated by Sea and Lakes, lots of forests and maybe also mountains? I'm not very good at Indonesian Geography.

Anyway my point is, that there isn't a need for large amounts of tanks because the terrain in Indonesia is not quite the best ones for large armor warfare. The best thing Indonesia could invest to build up its defences is on a good naval force and air force.

MeganeRid In reply to Panzerfire [2011-11-28 15:12:53 +0000 UTC]

A Number of large islands separated by sea, so yeah considering the amount of sea in our country, more ships would be better, but I do think they're trying to improve all three forces, so tanks for the army I guess

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Panzerfire In reply to MeganeRid [2011-12-02 15:40:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. Well a 100 should be a nice round number. Not too few but also not many enough to make any neighbours uneasy.

Tribersman-FR In reply to Panzerfire [2011-11-20 20:24:20 +0000 UTC]

Well, if they don't get it from Germany I'm sure my country (France) would gladly sell them some "Leclerc" and "Rafale".
...as our president tried to sell Rafale to Kadhafi before. Yes, he is that bad.

Anyway that's a good 3D model, I'm learning to use Solidwork and I don't know how many hour each day it would take me to reach this level of details).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Panzerfire In reply to Tribersman-FR [2011-11-20 22:05:22 +0000 UTC]

lol, that's good point. But I think Indonesia would have an easier time trying to buy weapons from the Russians. If the West has little regard to who they sell weapons, boy Imagine the Ruskies.

Or perhaps China, 'though I've heard they're more worried about supplying their own demands that those of other countries.

So, you new at 3-D modelling? Well, with practice you should be able to recreate any kind of vehicle or equipment or object you want to create. The key is practicing as much as you can. I once worked about doing 3-D models but it was a short face. I never got very good at it. But anyone with enough practice can pull anything they want.

I wish you good luck.

Great job! Love all the details, flares, panels etc.
But I can't help wonder why Indonesia (just looked at a map) would have any use for tanks? My country (Sweden) also bought some of these, jet do to terrain we can only use them effectively in the southern part and 2 islands...herp derp, military intelligence ftw!

Singapore? Leopard 2's? Why in blazes does a tropical island nation want 60+ ton European battlefield bases Main Battle Tank? Isn't that a tad bit overkill? I'd imagine armored cars or Strykers would fit more better unless there is something else in the wind. How far are you from China?
