It's a sleek looking design which shows (nagging on a high level) that it's meant for both atmospheric and space flight.
In space neither the wings nor the sleek form would be necessary thanks to no air drag. in fact, the best form for a space-only fighter would be a perfect ball (same low cross section to be targeted from all sides), but that's quite boring.
