Well, at least they're not as overly un-redeemable, bloodthirsty, vulgar, treacherous and disgustingly perverted as The Penguin (portrayed by Danny DeVito in Tim Burton's movie adaption), Gollum (though not really 'perverted', even before he was portrayed by Andy Serkis in Peter Jackson's movie adaptation) and King Bulblin (since Akira Himekawa's manga adaptation of "Twilight Princesss"). I mean, first of all they do have an strange deformity but they never actually killed a cat when they were babies, they may be bullies towards children who have better families than their own but they never actually intended to kidnap and drown every kid of the city in the cold sewer waters on Christmas...secondly, one being all alone in a cave, eating raw freshly killed meat and talking to himself without mirrors or computers are a lot scarier than living together in a shack at the middle of the junkyard and eating junk food they stole from the convenience stores, they are sane enough to actually talking to each other...and finally, attacking small villages and shooting arrows at defend-less innocent maidens for sheer sport is way more cowardly, sadistic and unforgivable than attacking big cities by mugging people, smeared graffiti and making prank calls for laughs. My sister said that the Gangreen Gang, despite of being part of the PPG's own rogues gallery, are some of the more decent characters in the setting.

Speaking of goblins, they are one of the Horde races from "World Of Warcraft"...so yeah, you're right, Snake really does look like them.
