I noticed that, in the movie, whenever a hand is directed to Quasimodo, generally his head/face... he flinches; he squints his eyes, or covers himself, or seemingly tries to defend himself... This was something i hadn't notice before for some reason... So, I decided to count how many times Quasimodo flinched when a hand was directed to his face.

I counted four:
1) When Esmeralda goes to clean his face of tomato, he tenses and squeezes his eyes shut.
2) When Frollo approaches him on his horse, he ducks his head down.
3) When Frollo is in the Court of Miracles and gently raises his hand to pat Quasimodo's head, Quasi tucks his head in almost like a turtle and closes his eyes.
4) When this little girl reaches for his face so he can bend down to her level so she can hug him, he tilts his head up, opens his arms out in a defensive posture and gasps slightly.

think about it; he is afraid of getting smacked

So, i thought it'd be cute to do this shot after his fourth flinch and it dawns on him,
"Hey... this kid isn't gonna smack me. She isn't afraid of me... she wants to give me a... a hug."

i just thought it'd be cute
