Description Hi guys~ ^^ This is a tutorial / guide on how I like to colour skin in photoshop <3 Its not for realism though, more simplified cartoony work, so I considered less tones and hues than I would if I were painting a realistic portrait.

Hope you like it and I really hope its useful

I'll hopefully be doing more tutorials whenever I can find the time..

Enjoy~

Thank you! It's pretty old (I know my technique has changed a lot since), so do you still find it useful and applicable or would you think an update to this would be more useful?

Don't be embarrassed at all! Everyone picks up things differently so there is no need to be ashamed of any method you use at all I'm really happy this helped though!

Also, how do you get the nice smooth clean lines in photoshop, my lineart always comes out jiggly and rough

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

megcowley In reply to HackerzInc [2010-08-12 19:25:47 +0000 UTC]

Well, this depends firstly on how you draw your lineart - do you use a mouse, or tablet, or other method?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HackerzInc In reply to megcowley [2010-08-13 00:22:57 +0000 UTC]

I use a mouse, but I've heard of guys who use tablet and have the same problem

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

megcowley In reply to HackerzInc [2010-08-13 07:30:31 +0000 UTC]

Ok, well I also had this problem when I started If you use a tablet the easiest thing is to zoom in a little more, and also try to draw from your shoulder (wider sweeping lines) rather than your wrist (smaller more jittery uncontrolled lines).

If you use a mouse the easiest thing I found to do when I was in your position was use the pen tool in Photoshop to create perfect lines. Do you use photoshop?

HackerzInc In reply to megcowley [2010-08-13 22:31:09 +0000 UTC]

yeah I use photoshop cs5, just started, but I'm kinda used to the lines in flash(smoothens for you), but I found a way to make the lines in PS look like how I want, thanks anyways

megcowley In reply to HackerzInc [2010-08-14 14:34:59 +0000 UTC]

Ah I have never used flash. Thats a handy feature!

Just out of interest what way have you found in PS to make the lines smooth?

HackerzInc In reply to megcowley [2010-08-20 15:08:50 +0000 UTC]

pressure simulation in PS

hyperactive-activate [2010-04-12 10:24:14 +0000 UTC]

Wow, this is the best skin tutorial I have seen! I usually find it quite hard to colour skin because of my lineart always ends up pixelly even when I use vectors. Now I see I can just go over it with highlights and it will still look cool Thank you

OMG. this tutorial was so helpful, i was doing a manga artwork right, and i realised i had no effing clue as to what the hell i was doing when i was colouring!!! sucks to be new. anyways, i did the entire skin layer in less than an hour with this! and during it i figured how to make my pen drawings linearts with only a few settings instead of doing all this fiddly stuff with a brusk (yay!!!)

anyway, i just wannted to give you an uber cyber hug and say thankyou so much, the instructions were so clear and everything!
