Description I've been working on this sucker at work for I reckon a good month now. I have procrastinated endlessly because it was always going to be a challenge. And while I love challenges, it does make me arse around an awful lot.

When I undertake an artwork I aim always to improve. So, if I think something will compliment a piece, no matter how hard it may be to render I will work at it until I get it. In this case, when I sat down with the vision in my head of a mechanical mermaid from the future, it included elements I have never drawn in pencil before. A futuristic city clouded in smog, and a vast body of water that was still enough for the most part to reflect it. Not to mention a mermaid made from mechanical parts.

It has been a real blast and I'm totally thrilled with the fact that I finished it... go team!
I shall leave you with a short and bad poem. I'm in a Poemy Mood. So too bad.

Futuristic scenes
of mechanical mermaids
and flying machines
At World's End
The cities expand
From ocean to air
They will adapt
And so will we...

[For where else is left for us
But the highest heights of the sky
And the deepest depths of the sea?]

I really enjoy the whole concept of this piece, the robotic mermaid especially. The whole thing looks well thought out and the level of detail is beautiful! Thanks for posting.

You've outdone yourself Meggers! The light/shadow play is just awesome, not to mention that futuristic cityscape and the design of the mermaid! Love it!

AWESOME Meg! You know I love you (did consider writing your brain there ... decided it sounded too zombie) I love the city. It looks fairly smog clouded to me. I love the airship too.

OH wow thankyou! And the Zombie lover in me also appreciates you considering my brains, at least.
The dirigible was a last minute add in, and it was such a pain, but I am SO glad I did it!

Wow... you've outdone yourself here, I think. The level is detail is quite high, though doesn't distract from the main figure at any point, I think.
Congrats on drawing the first futuristic mermaid I think I've ever seen in my life.
I wonder if the waves on the water should be parallel with the horizon line or is it just me? I have a feeling it's the latter, so just ignore that!

Thanks Donna! I had a laugh at your comment... first futuristic mermaid! See the creepiness of my inner brains?
I too considered if the waves should be parallel... after looking at lots of reference it seemed like they could be anywhere, so I'm just assuming there is some in-flowing port harbour behind her there... somewhere... *cough* Do you think it makes the picture wonky? I'm undecided. Also any hints on the metal? I consider you to be my guru of metal rendering

I think the waves work at any angle, upon reflection (pun NOT intended) because they could easily be the wake of a vessel. -Makes it more interesting, really, because the viewer gets to think if there IS a boat there, what sort of boat, etc.
With (shiny) metal the more contrast the better. Put your lightest lights right next to your darkest darks. There'a great FARP tutorial at Elfwood: [link] [link]
These pages are good because they show how different shapes reflect metal.
One thing I did notice is that, with the tail, you shaded each plate the same. Some are half-covered by her arm, and the arm and tail would reflect on each other. Some plates would reflect the rock she's sitting on, some would probably be reflecting the sun, while others might have little sunlight hitting them. The breast plates are great though, and I love the little cut-out metal detail on the tail.

Oh awesome, thankyou so much Donna! With your help I shall one say rule metal... in some odd artistic way anyway. Thanks for the tute too, I will definitely be checking that out.
I get really annoyed with the way that tattooists do metal, it always looks awful and like its always in the Nevada desert, lol. SO I am determined to be superior, mwahah!
