I think that's why Starscream began to actively fight for leadership instead of just making snarky remarks.
In either case, I know I can no longer accept BADASS!CRUEl!ABUSIVE!Megatron in fanon, at least for the G1 series ... but maybe later G1 episodes will prove me wrong.

It's a goofy 80's show, even at his most evil, there's still an element of rediculousness.
Later versions of Megatron are much less rediculous, but the autobots seem to be much more rediculous in these versions. (I'M LOOKING AT YOU ANIMATED! Not that I hate that show, just that the autobots were PAINFULLY stupid and you wanted the decepticons to win just for that reason.)

(They're hard to tolerate. The decepticons become so ridiculously likable because of how annoying the autobots are)

(I think there's a word for the phenomena in which you would normally not like a character, but everything is against that character and so you're forced to admire their perseverance ... which I think explains the entire Animated series. The Decepticons would win if the writers didn't conspire against them and put in DEUS EX MACHINA)
