Description The African Grey Parrot, Psittacus erithacus, is a medium-sized parrot native to Central and Western Africa. In 2007, it was listed as Near Threatened by IUCN due primarily to the pet trade. Since these parrots are adept talkers, large numbers of them were taken from the wild as babies and sold to pet owners around the world. This, combined with threats to their jungle habitat and their status as an agricultural pest in some areas, has led to declines in population numbers. We can help slow down the decrease in population by insisting that pet parrots are captive-bred (or not owning them at all) and only buying sustainably farmed or harvested timber.

This is my February entry for *8TwilightAngel8 's Endangered Art project. I just had to do an African Grey, even though they're "only" near threatened, because... I own one! His name is Baby and he likes to pretend he's a telephone. Even though he was born in captivity, I still feel twinges of guilt about owning him.

I painted this in openCanvas 1.1 and added frame and text in Photoshop. It took about 3 hours. I swear, the concept looked a lot cooler in my head. The idea is that the species is linked to the land. If the habitat is declining, so is the species, because they rely on the jungle for food and nesting grounds.

I was inspired by this photo of my bird, which I absolutely love:

Congratulations - Your beautiful art has been featured in Flock-Together group's African Grey Spotlight!
April Bird Feature - Fifty Shades of African Grey!
The African Grey Parrot has a history with humans dating back to ancient times, a fact that is no wonder to today’s grey owners. With plumage like a regal suit of armor, luminous, ever-watchful eyes and a vivid crimson tail, the grey's alluring beauty has held our favor for centuries as a companion bird. But beyond good looks, it's this bird’s intelligence and personality that keeps us hooked.
Aviculturists have two recognized sub-species for African Greys:
The Congo African grey is by far the favorite of the two subspecies; it is larger and its feathers are more prominently scalloped, and it has a bright scarlet tail that reaches full coloring at maturity.
The Timneh African grey is smaller with a deeper grey body, a lighter colored beak, and tail ranging in color from maroon to charcoal. The Congo is often s

I love the concept you used for this drawing: the idea that the species is linked to the land The drawing is beautiful It is sad to hear that the African Grey Parrot is listed as near threatened They have always been one of my favourite parrots.

Wow! It's amazing! ;w;
I really like how you drew feathers.
And I love the idea their feathers become leaves. ^^ And your concept is very interesting. It always makes me angry when I read how humanity can be awful with animals, just because they are fun, or they can talk, or anything else... u_u

Thanks!

Yeah, it's a bit demoralizing to realize how ubiquitous and inevitable it is to see animals being exploited for human entertainment. A lot of people won't even bother to educate themselves about "fun" animals' plights.
