Description For 's competition on Deviantart
Probably the most complete background I have ever done. Though I still need a lot of work on depth. And my first go on illustration board!

Moth

Species: Shi'Rah
Coloration: Buckskin with flecks of black and white (many similar to leopard appaloosa spots in size and shape) on his neck, chest, belly, arms and flanks - burns - new and old from roving sparks and embers.
Gender: Buck
History: [Moth] is a blacksmith and silversmith - his forge is especially well known for the bells he produces, for physical ornamentation as well as practical usage in music and to bell lead herd animals.
A buckskin with dark points, his mane is in wiry silver ringlets and his wings are marked like a moths - hence his name.
From the time his eyes first changed colour to the amber they now are flame has fascinated him, distracted him, devoured his attention.
Many a time a uncle or aunt would find him too close to a fire and have to draw him away - his eyelashes frazzled and mane burnt short - driving the rest of his family to despair as he was so often appearing to be in mourning for no other reason than his pyrophiliac tendancies.
With a delicacy of touch that can turn a piece of scrap metal into a branch of orange blossoms and a wiry strength that can hammer ingots into large cauldrons from dawn to dusk, Moth is besotted with flame and has little time for others of his species - his heart belonging to the furnace and the embershaded metals that glow and spark beneath his hammers.
He is what a fire-dreamer - what we might call a pyro-autistic

One of his sisters is a herbalist and apocathery - for her he creates metal leaves to label the jars of herbs and tinctures she produces - amulets to increase the potency and life of those they depict - the strength and life of the metal being transfered. Similar amulets are also made for luck and protection though the bells, utensils, cauldrons and tools are his main products.
Another of his siblings is a potter and clay-artist - It is she who, with her kiln halls backing onto the wall of his his larger forge, keeps an eye on him to make sure he comes back to the real world once in a while.
From her paw comes much of the non metal decoration in his rooms - a combination of metal and glazed ceramics. Though his work bench is carved wood with a stone top to prevent chance of charring, as is his bed-box in a corner of the smithy, curtained off from the rest of the area by a sheet of small linked tiles (I had intended to do a picture of him sleeping based off my whippet-dog but time ran out).
Moth only on rare occassions remembers to wear a leather apron to protect his chest and belly from sparks but his family has at least drummed him into keeping his waterbarrel lidded to keep the content clean and soot free.

'Moth to a Flame' was only conciously realised when i first uploaded the sketch - I had already decided on moth marked wings in my initial concept storming but didn't actually twig on the other, far more obvious symbolism - the unconcious mind is a fabulous thing!)

SOOOO much imagination went into this, where to start- I think my favorite bit in the whole darn thing is the little 'sticky note' card with Remember To Eat! written on it, posted no doubt by a concerned relative who just shakes their head when Moth gets engrossed in some project- The whole thing reminds me of my own Studio.

Im sorry its taken so long to get all the prizes sorted hun.

I wanted to let you know how very deeply I love this artwork. From the 'Rah to the little details in the bg, like the note. You paid extra careful attention to the peoples and thier life-style. You showed a beautiful attention to the culture. Moth is very special and I hope to see him again. perhaps an ACEO?

Glad you like. I yearn for wings but at the same time know just how much maintainance they would require and how they would be cumbersom on a human form ^_^
Suppose I'll just have to petition for a bird form in my next incarnation

Placed or unplaced I gained a lot from this comp and that is the most important to me - that I was motivated to create something with a focus on improving my work and got the opportunity to see how other artists tackled the same subject matter

Why are there so few comments on this? It's amazing! Since your sketch I have been patiently awaiting the final painting. It's beautiful. The details are particularly striking. Especialy on the wings and in the background. Really wonderful work!

Its nice when the final piece out does the sketch - sometimes sketches catch something that a polished piece just can't seem to hold.

Yah - I'd say one of his sisters put it up recently - it hasn't yet been used as a fire lighter. Im glad it came out legible ^.^
