Description Mini-notebook - 7.5 x 5.5 cm, French artpaper (90g\cm3) sewn and dyed by hand, antique leather, endbands woven by hand, endpapers made from real 1898 Imperial Russia ruble banknotes, spine decorated with a piece of one of the banknotes.

This piece took a while to finish - making endbands takes quite some time and patience (at least for me), not to mention that I had to actually CUT 2 banknotes from my collection... Though I realise that they were tattered & generally in bad condition and now they will live on as something new...still, feels wrong.

Anyway, questions? Comments? I may be horrible in replying to those but I love reading 'em

It's really beautiful. I love the antique feel it has, and using the banknotes really enhances this. I really like the title on the spine, and the way the raised cords taper down to the cover.

NICE! I like the pop color (blue) in the endband. Gives it the 16th century feel which matches the cord that comes to a point on either side.

Took more than it should 'cause I'm lazy :3 Basically a solid evening for the paper (dying & drying it), a couple hours for cutting & sewing it later, 2 to 3 hrs to make & glue the endbands plus about an hour to add cardboard covers. Then a few more hours for the leathers & lock and the last hour was for the old banknotes & finishing touches.

Very steampunk. Really like the way the cords go into the board. Like the headbands (linen thread? And it looks like you took the cores into the boards as well?). Really sharp looking piece.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Meliadhor In reply to usagibrian [2011-02-02 23:52:43 +0000 UTC]

Why thank you for the kind words! Yep, linen - gotta say, I am thinking on using waxed thread next time, the blue thread is getting fuzzy after a while, but then again wax would add quite some silly trouble too, no?

Aaand gotta admit to something -> spine's a fake, just like quite some 19th century books it's only a decoration. I stopped using the proper medieval sewing methods after a while (and after 2 notebooks, A4 and A5 sewn on thick linen cords & with leather handwoven endbands) as 1. takes quite a while to make and 2. ( real issue) no one ever saw the difference and everyone just pointed out that I'm an idiot as you can get better stuff in shops - yep, they meant the cast-in-plastic covers and whatnot.

...still, the book opens neatly and seems to 'work' properly as a mini-address\notebook.

usagibrian In reply to Meliadhor [2011-02-03 07:10:42 +0000 UTC]

I use mostly silk for headbands, and I sort of like what happens to untreated linen over time. So long as the core is stable, it should hold up fine (you can protect it further by working the leather over it as well).

The spine still looks great, and faking cords is a fine 19th century practice.

And everyone's mistaken. You just can't notice the difference for a few decades (and in a century or two, those cheapo books will be dust while yours will still have the cover boards attached, protecting the textblock).

how did you learned to make endbands? I wished to learn that too. Awsome work.

Meliadhor In reply to MadArlequim [2011-02-02 23:40:32 +0000 UTC]

The weird way - I gathered every bit of a reference photo I could lay my hands on, the best being photos of cut up or partially destroyed medieval codex, manuscripts or early prints and slowly (and with a lot of pain) I managed to think out some more or less imperfect way of crafting those.

Friendly advice - google image, though a good image finder, gives a LOT of unsafe and virus ridden sites. I was really surprised just how many PC viruses could one find on library\university\museum webpages.

Guess I'll be using that idea some more then. Though to be fair I have no idea how to, well, protect such things - historically such things were just glued onto books where they would slowly crumble from old age or tear from use... I was thinking on applying some lacquer but that would be to shiny... You wouldn't have an idea here, now would you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nymla In reply to Meliadhor [2011-02-06 21:59:02 +0000 UTC]

Meliadhor In reply to LordWobbler [2011-02-02 23:29:37 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much, kind Sir. Though I still feel rather awkward after cutting those banknotes up, even though they were in a pretty bad condition and wouldn't fetch a modern-day ruble on the market.

Right now I'm trying to think of a way to install old coins into notebooks without damaging them too much - like, hot-glue or something, I guess nailing them would be way too crude.
