Yeah I know what you mean. I'm trying to go for the somewhat semi-realism feel? where the lineart merges with the colours to make the figures look less cartoony and more realistic.

I use paint tool sai but I also use Medibang paint pro and FireAlpaca (Last two are free programs and are AMAZING!)
And don't worry, I fail semi-realism all the time.
Sometimes, I forget where the lights coming from and in the end, my shading looks like I rubbed mud all over their faces.

It doesn't look failed at all or it's not like that you can't draw semi-realism.
You did it, maybe you say it doesn't look the way what you wished for as result.
But with little practice it will look better as it is now, what looks already good enough with or without practice.

Who cares about light and shading physics, as long as it does looks good at the end lol XD

Art never turns out the way you imagined it...
You try and draw a beautiful piece of a cute anime girl with a shit amount of bows, but then it ends up looking like a wide-eyed alien cosplaying as a kawaii animu girl
We must all always remember physics when drawing... yes... except for when drawing hair and boobs cause we all know they both defy gravity!!!1

I find that when drawing, the hair and hands are always the things I leave for last... Cause I hate drawing them

The most difficult things to me are backgrounds XD I am too lazy in drawing these. Drawing
hairs are fine... Hands the same, maybe not that well but backgrounds had been always such a damn weakness for me.
Since I only work with my mouse, for me is working with a tablet like a high privilege which I will never be able to use lol XD
I have one at home, and I am still never used to it since I have it..

Cause Anime is awesome...
Aah Backgrounds... My mortal enemy. The foregrounds pretty easy since usually you know exactly what you want your characters to do,
but then I have absolutely no Idea what background would suit the foreground. So I play around with colours and patterns. But you see...
I'm not exactly the best at figuring out which colours go best with which colours. So in the end, I'm left with some bright ass neon shit,
or a background that merges with the foreground in one mass of nothingness. LIFE!
That's why I tend to focus of a solid colour background more.
I believe I started drawing using a tablet about a year ago? And my god was it hectic. I could not get used to how you draw on a slab of plastic
but the lines showing up on the monitor. (I used a $100 small wacom intous pen and touch tablet from amazon)
Eventually, I did get used to it... kind of
AND HOLY COW!

Holy Shit, Boku No Pico is in my blacklist XDD My brother and friends told me to never
watch this anime for my own safety what I gladly never watched it... But I am more concerned that
my brother maybe saw it already, or just only know much to talk about...
Although, I made enough mistakes in watching other Anime which turned out to be real WTF ones

Well you manage for sure much better than me drawing fore and backgrounds. I only use
random images from Google which goes well with my style or coloring, at times I even edit them
a bit if I have to. The only first image what I did so far myself and for practice with my tablet was this image here of it's
background:
I found a photo what I liked and also tried to realize it in my style. What actually worked somehow XD

This gives with your semi-realism style the "lively"-vibe on your works which makes them "pure".
And now we can really laugh... I believe I have the exact same tablet as yours XD
I have Wacom intous pen and touch creative too, the small. It was once in a special package
with Manga Studio. During the long issues to register my tablet, the Manga studio didn't existed anymore
after one year so I got instead from the download Clipstudio. Actually a super awesome program,
but sadly my laptop couldn't handle this much awesomeness so I had to de-install it. Plus I had really
hard times in figuring out how I could use it the best. It was far really difficult as with Sai, and also more complicated in drawing
with a mouse and given up. If I will get a new laptop I will download the programm again.
And yes, I do draw with a mouse XD;
I did this long enough since I was used to it as my regular way of drawing. I started drawing
in 2011 I think when I had only my mouse at my side XD My first art was pixel back then until I got Sai.
It is really hard yeah, especially if you're a perfectionist in your heart in trying to keep the lineart smooth and beautifuly bent.
So happy that Curves exists and even have the chance to edit your lines XD
Without that and if I would draw with a tablet... I wouldn't have moved any inches unless I am satisfied with a little perfect piece of line XD
My works always takes me a whole week or even two. It depends mostly how difficult the OC's or details are, and I am such a sucker for details...
I would even spent voluntary drawing detailled details als long as it makes me satisfied of course. It's also at the same time a curse, you will
work for your works much longer than you actually want...
The best example of my detail-madness is this one here. I know no one can't see well the details because of my watermarks (which is necessary cause my wartworks has been stolen all the time...) but still one could see I guess the noticeable features.
