Chapter 84... Most depressing chapter I've ever read in the entire history of manga. -_-

I don't care about Armin... I care about Bertl!! ;_;

I feel like that chapter was portrayed so poorly and no one (outside of the SnK universe) cared about his death. Everyone is all "he got what was coming to him!" Because of how he acted about Annie.

I mean, obviously he was just trying to not let his emotions get involved with his mission. And he was a child soldier forced into a role that he clearly did not want...

BLEH THE OLD WOUNDS HAVE OPENED!

CAN WE CRY TOGETHER HOLY SHIT I GETCHA SO MUCH

What fucked me up was how they just showed RBA being troubled as fuck over Marco, yet when it came to the "good guys" doing the same they... celebrated? It caused just such a dissonance to me. Plus I know it ain't fair to blame it all on Armin but I felt his whole character was butchered too, Erwin always made sacrifices that came with a cost and that made all his plans more realistic, Armin somehow doesn't fail a single time, never faces any consequences and the only thing he put at stake (his own life) was... given back just like that? felt forced as fuck and disrespectful in all regards to how good the buildup was going on til that point.

Not to mention it feels like the only reason Bert failed his mission was because he dared to have emotions and have some pity on Armin. Feels like his character development existed solely to have an excuse for him to fail and become serum fodder. ...I hope he haunts his dreams cuz nobody deserves a closure THAT shitty.

...gosh sorry for the rant, I dunno if you're caught up with stuff going now too, but what gives me hope is that we're getting Reiner's POV and I genuinely want him to kick sum ass to make shit fair :,c

DID WE JUST BECOME BEST FRIENDS?!

I relate to your thought process so much. In the beginning of the series, I was totally on Eren and company's side, and it was hard not to be. They were very relatable characters for the dystopian setting. That was, until all the little pieces of the past for RBA that Isayama provided us... Annie's father begging for her to come back home, and her tears when she lost to the Scout Regiment... Reiner's way of coping with the crimes he's commited, with his personality disorder. Bertolt telling the other's the quote in your drawing, and the obvious pain on his face when his former comrades confront him in chapter 48. It's pretty clear that they were brainwashed child soldiers who were fed lies. When Bertolt/Reiner broke the walls in 845, they were sure that the people inside the walls were emotionless monsters. After they joined the 104th cadet corps, it must have shaken their resolve because they learned that these were real human beings. I think that's why it took 5 years for them to take down the gate in Trost.

There was such a parallel to Bertolt's and Marco's death. And you're right, RBA were troubled and clearly didn't want to do it. It broke me that the characters didn't really seem to care when Bertolt died. UGH! Even if someone betrays you, after spending 5 years of your life with them, can you honestly be happy about them dying in such a horrifying way? The way they celebrated really made me reconsider them as the "heroes".  Armin stated early in the series that you had to disregard your humanity and become a monster to face monsters. But he has yet to sacrifice anyone for the good of humanity, other than himself. Erwin definitely feels more realistic. I was sad about Armin's death, but it felt so fitting for the theme of the series.

I am completely caught up with everything(Hope you are too, otherwise disregard this paragraph). I know that RBA had to carry out there mission because when they were "forced" (In quotations because we can't be sure yet if they were all forced into it by parents, like Zeke) to become warriors, they clearly have families waiting for them back home, and if they were to betray the Marley, then what would happen to their families? Especially, if say, Gabi and co. are their siblings... I never thought when I started this series that I would be so torn on who the actual protagonist is. I mean, I shed a few tears writing this out and remembering all that stuff that happened to RBA. I don't know why I'm so damn attached to those characters.

Every online forum about SnK I've seen hate Bertolt so much and were glad for his death..... Man, it hurts to feel so alone. Yeaaaah, also sorry for the rant.

Ugh!! Armin annoys me so much lately in particular. Like the whole idea behind his character seems to be to abandon your humanity, but every time he has the chance it only takes like a few panels of "oops i did a gross thing" and it never comes up again, it never affects his character. At least Eren looks like he's done with everything when he was a ball of ragebeforehand :c

You can't just have a series like this and like... not relate to characters that are just super interesting in the context fo it? or at least not understand em. It just baffles me how anyone was happy about Bert's death, like... even if I hated him I'd expect him to go with a big bang given the things he's done, and it all amounted to very little. I feel anyone who's firmly on EMA's side and hates everything else is just missing the point too harshly D:

sry I took forever to reply btw!! finals and stuff got in the way :c BUT since the series advanced in the meantime can I just say? I love how Reiner is kinda the protag now EHEHEHHEEHE
