Description This is much larger than your screen indicates. It's 46" x 32" on wood panel, and that's what makes it neato. I spent a really long time trying to finish this, mostly because it's hard for me to get excited about subject matter like this. It's for my kid's room.

This is the largest painting I've ever done, and I learned a lot by doing it. 1)I was really forced to paint very generally at the start, and to get more specific as it developed. I used a big brush at the beginning and finished it off with a #4 filbert. 2)If you paint with thin layers of oil paints like I do, it helps to do a very general underpainting in acrylic first. I don't know how this affects the long-term longevity of the piece, but it makes it easy to get good coverage with just a little bit of oil paint. 3) I don't like doing big paintings. They're very cool, but it makes for a lot more work. Kudos to the old masters like David who painted colossal pictures. 4) I don't like doing pictures for kids. Not very thought-provoking. I guess you could read into this picture and say it's about class struggle or something, but it's really just a picture of monkeys and giraffes giving each other some weird vibes. The giraffes are snotty, and the monkeys are partying. The toucan is just hanging out.

Actually I thought one of the giraffes was asking the monkey about the banana and if he could have some. It's a pretty cheery piece and very enjoyable. I don't know how you managed to get it to work o here, being so large and all!

Thanks, I painted it for my son's room, but now I can't find a frame that big for cheap.

This is a photo of it that I took in my front yard.

Oh dear.I guess you may have to build something.Or hang it from the back on the panels?

Yeha except the panel was cut by a handsaw and is not very attractive. I may just have to spring for an expensive one. This has been sitting in my basement for 4.5 years now.

Hi ! you have been chosen by one of my ODD Account watchers to be in the spotlight !

Today's theme is dedicated entirely to the masses as they have sent me O.D.D. suggestions to feature.
ODDS (oibyrd's daily deviations) are to honor the sometimes overlooked artists of dA that I personally think deserve some exposure and also, to introduce the more popular artists to the new/overlooked deviants. I prefer to showcase ALL artwork that I love (and that includes popular artists) in order to create a non-biased feature of the talent on dA Please click the link below to see your work featured and to view other featured artists . If you prefer not to be a featured artist, just send me a note and I will remove you from the list. Cheers! Sandi xoxo

omg. monkeys!

can i be your kid? you can paint one of JUST MONKEYS for my room.

although the giraffes are neat in a "too cool for school" sort of way. the toucan makes me want fruit loops.

the colors are very... kid's room-ish. but it's neat-o. how many kids can say their dad did original artwork for their room?

my dad was an art major at the Y too and he freakin' NEVER did anything like this for us. i had to steal a print from one of his etchings to have anything of his...

bottom line: piece=A parenting=A++

Nice of you to say so. Hopefully the painting compensates for a childhood of living in relative poverty.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

undisclosed In reply to melocopter [2006-05-19 13:35:03 +0000 UTC]

poverty doesnt make maladjusted children - parents who dont spend enough time with or doing things for their children does.

the childhood memories i'm most fond of date back to the days where we could barely afford pbj's and mac & cheese..

you could definitely be a children's book illustrator. And that scale is really admirable. Well done.

Oh well, it is a very adorable piece nevertheless! I always thought your smooth style would work in this kind of painting, it is very versatile. The colors are pretty conventional, but beautiful and cozy at the same time.

melocopter In reply to AngelicLawyer [2006-04-21 03:13:56 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much. Lots of the colors are straight from the tube. A big no-no, but it made things easy.

Beautifully done, as always. You're right about the large paintings (which is why I try not to do them often). I think the oddest aspect is the degree of interest that the giraffes are showing in the banana

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

melocopter In reply to kolaboy [2006-04-18 00:57:18 +0000 UTC]

You know, now that I look at it again, the banana is pretty much the focal point of the painting. Every animal is facing toward it and even the tree is bowing down to it. A fallic children's picture? Not cool of me.
