Hello! I'm Jessica from ProjectComment to critique your work.

There is a lot I really enjoy about this piece. The skin tone looks natural and rich in color with a few areas of visible brush strokes giving it a stylish appeal. The colors used compliment each other and the shading is very consistent with the light source. The use of pink throughout the face and neck brings depth to the portrait as well as keeping the viewer intrigued by drawing the eye throughout the piece. While noticeable, the pink is not overly conspicuous as it blends well with the skin. The highlights (I'm assuming you used a white gel pen) are lovely and well placed. The lips give almost a wet appearance because of it. I love the folds of skin beneath the eyes and how you shaded them.

While the skin looks realistic, the hair does not giving a very juxtaposed sense about the entire portrait. This is what makes me enjoy it so much. The fun curved lines of the hair coupled with the bright color is a wonderful contrast to the realistic almost traditional renaissance style painted face. I do think that some more color added to the shadows of the hair (maybe a different color) would bring out the contrast a bit more to display the curls to their full advantage. Compared to the face, they do feel a little flat to me. The ink you've lined everything with is sketch like in nature while still being organized and thought out.

The background color works very well with the blue and the skin tone however it a bit bland compared to the rest of the portrait. If you had painted the clothing or stars, this would not have much effect since the background would be secondary to the person. I think you could bring out the contrast between the painted and unpainted parts by darkening the yellow (maybe adding another color to it as well) around the shoulders. That I feel would balance out the portrait and keep the viewers attention. This all goes back to color theory.

All in all, this is a beautifully well done portrait and after viewing your gallery, I think it is possibly your best. I know it is my favorite one from your collection. I would love to know more about your painting process and what watercolors you are using.

Thank you for this critique!

yeah his hair is much flatter than what I was going for. I kinda just don't know what I'm doing all around/
I agree that that dang background prob could be better. I appreciate your suggestions honest

I use those cheap student block color palettes ( I have 2)  but I recently got a Winsor & Newton watercolor travel set and it's super nice aha
watercolor painting is very new to me so I just kind of want to see what works but at the same time I'm too scared to play around with it

Fun? fact: my dumb self used to think blue and yellow were complementary colors and only this year did I discover that was not true at all

I really enjoy the life in the brush strokes! The looseness in the shirt helps dissolve the lower portion of the piece into the background, making the eye focus on the centre. Your use of watercolours and skintone really solidify the piece. Great work. I'm liking the blue hair!

The only way it could really look bad is if it's not thoroughly dyed. and when it starts to fade( but blue fades super quick to the greenish color, so yeah TONS of upkeep)
I used to dye my hair a lot so sorry if I just splurged a bunch of useless facts atchu UnU

Greetings from

This is brilliant. You obviously have a great grasp of forms, shapes, etc., and your colours are well applied as well. The left half of the face looks a wee bit flat, but then again you are going for that mixed style of realism with stylized illustration. I think it's working great. You have a really nice brush style. I DO love his eyebrows and hair quite a bit.

I do wonder though if there is more you can do with the background to make the face pop. More flat and matte background with this stylized figure might go really well. Right now the weight of the colours in the face/hair and the background isn't too different, and brush strokes are also the same. So some variations might have made the eye go more toward the face. And maybe a bit more details/colours on the clothes would be nice. It kind of looks like you went "meh" after doing the face.

Drawing different race isn't always easy, but I think you did a great job and he looks Asian (I'm Asian by the way). I know loads of half Asian kids, and he does look like he can be.

Overall, you are obviously very good. Oh wait, I just realized I've commented on a few of your pieces in the past. I think this one so far is my favourite. Keep up the good work.

mm I used like two brushes on this so yeah it makes sense all the strokes look the same

My biggest complaint of all time is that I don't care lol
I guess that's true, like I really wasn't wanting to flesh out anything but his face and it SHOWS
like I just want to not try and it be great u^u

yes!! I'm glad he looks the part aha

thank you thank you! This is one of my favorite ones also
