Features like these indicate they are closely related to the family that includes whip scorpions, pseudoscorpions, and solfugids.

Hmmm... interesting. I though that harvestmen were the closest relatives that mites had within the arachnids...
But I think I see the resemblance. Not sure why it wasn't obvious before.
...
Ok, so it's the ricinuleids that are closes to the acarids. Huh... go figure.

Those with spiny carapaces and complex pedipalps are of a more ancient genus that analogously hearken back to the ancient giant sea scorpions of the Cambrian era.
