Description Normandy Battle 1944 WW2.....

I've seen this exhasuted face in a book I've had for about 10 years and always wanted to draw it... and now I have.

He is German, and although I don't support what happened, innocent lives were involved and this one, I am sure is.

Hope you like

MIXED MEDIA: Black paper, charcoal, and white oil paint for the highlights... at first it was only to be black charcoal and white, but me being so silly did it on black paper so I had to use oils for the highlights... ah well.

Very very nice, His expression is great . But I think, before anyone should be judging either sides of the war (Axis, Allies) you should take in hand how horrible it was for both sides, but thats just my opinion.

I can only imagine how it was like for both sides. The reason why I pointed out that this was a german soldier, is because he is/was, and.. man, I have taken into account how horrible war is. full stop. there is no opinions on war, it just was.. and is, which is horrible. -but it's a lesson. thanks.

A fine reproduction of the lost face on the cover of the book 'The forgotten soldier' the memoirs of a soldaten on the ostfront or Eastern front fighting the well prepared Soviets. Its history, yes the Nazi's commited some henious crimes, we all know this, but if we all read the memoirs of the German side, especially the wehrmacht and the luftwaffe diaries, we will see that 'not all' were willing to fight, and most never called themselves 'Nazi's'..it was their upbringing, the doctrine forced upon them as soon as they could walk, That war killed enough people for the world to surely see, that Wars are always lost, nobody wins in war, the aggressors, the defenders, nobody, because lives are lost on all sides, hardly victory is it? if you have to spill the blood of your countrymen....

A great picture sir. A favourite of mine.

apologies for my late reply, i see you say.. a 'reproduction of the lost face on the cover of the book 'The Forgotten Soldiers' ? I drew this from a '20th century' book.. looking at the big events of the century.. i've been trying to get in contact with someone about copyright.. -but have given up.

i'll have to check out 'the forgotten soldiers'.

thanks for the comment.. although i'm not a sir war has always been something very important for me personally to remember, just the mere reality of it is something that through new generations i think are.. forgetting..?

The 'war' in iraq for example.. doesn't seem that important to people.. politicians are still taking advantage of their people to gain more power and to be on the good side of the ones with the most power.. so on so forth.

This picture is actually really striking. The monotone colours you chose for this piece really do help bring out his feelings.
Unfortunately, I only know some bare bone background information on the causes of the WWII, mostly what I've heard is Holocaust surviver stories. But I was actually moved by this piece, because it really shows that not all German soldiers were vicious bloodthirsty Nazis. It reminds me very much of a book I'm reading now, called "All Quiet on the Western Front" by Erich Maria Remarque. Even though the book is set in WWI, this piece really shows that all the anguish and horrors of war are repeated throughout any and every war.
Very well done.

Thank you...

I, the same in regards to not knowing alot on the wars. I have watched alot of war movies, but they're all filtered to some extent, and still don't cast the 'entire' picture of the whole story being told -alot have been reproduced from personal stories...

This pic has stirred alot of emotions I think through people, both good and bad, only two people have expressed negative 'opinions' but ya get that... besides those comments really did not make a whole lot of sense to me anyway, so I just moved on....

I've heard of that book, and have been told it's an excellent story, or documentary. I should move my ass and read it myself, might 'educate' me.

thanks so much. I wasn't 100% sure of it at first, unsure of whether to display the fact that he is (was) german. It sure sparked up alot of interests and disinterests... I wonder how different most people would have commented if I had put nothing about him being german...

I am now happy with it after the great comments I've had on it though... and yours is one of them
