Description Custom repaint of Age of Extinction Grimlock

This is more of a WIP really, there are still a few bits on him I need to do, but I'm happy to show off how he looks so farΒ

His colouring was a challenge, as in the movie he seems to be a green/grey, or possibly just a dirty, moss covered beast; but I think this works okay and is a definite improvement on the original. Also I think this will look way better in fullview

I'm thinking of putting this on ebay, btw

How did you do this so well? I went over it with a base coat of grey spray paint and then dry brushed it with basically a shinier paint. It came out a little bit gunky, so I'm considering sanding down the cover paint and starting fresh. Did you spray paint the whole thing?

Cheers!

Okay paint the whole thing black, I sprayed this one but I don't always.
Drybrush the whole thing silver. I use humbrol enamels. This has two slightly different shades of silver.
Drybrush green/brown highlights. I think his claws are copper/bronze
The key is making sure your drybrush is very dry
Oh and I did his eyes (both sets) by hand and I'm thinking of adding some more weathering by hand.
I hope this helps! Were you working on this Grimlock too?Β

I started off with a dark grey primer spray paint?

Would I have to sand off my original paint?

With the brush, how'd you manage to keep it so dry? I might have just kept too much paint on at one time.

It does help! I'm a novice level 1 rookie painter, aha. I found the same Grimlock a few weeks back and the color scheme left me unsettled, aha. Besides that, I think the color of him in AOE is really cool. So I thought I'd give it a shot!

This was sprayed matt black first, his upper legs are the untouched base coat

If it's only one layer you can probably get away with simply spraying the whole thing again, the drybrushing doesn't add much thickness to the paint.

Get some paint on your brush and 'paint' a piece of kitchen towel or something else disposable until the brush is very dry. I sprayed an old figure black and drybrush onto that until the brush is dry enough for the figure I want to paint Keep brushing the figure until it look the way you want, then add extra colour layers.Β

This is a good figure to start with as he looks very cool pretty quickly, post a pic when you're done I'd like to see it! Β Oh, and check out my gallery for some of my other repainted figures.

I think I'll sand off or at least rub down what I have now, aha. Start fresh.

I unfortunately added more than one layer, but it doesn't sound bad start anew

I'll have to give this a shot!

I definitely will! I'll probably post a pic of my beforehand as well, so everyone can hopefully see the big difference. I noticed the Grimlock and got excited, I'll have to take a look at the rest!

Oh, I meant to ask, is there a difference between enamels and acrylics when it comes to covering a toy?

Thanks!

I tend to use enamels as there seems to be a wider variety of colours, at least where I buy them and they are inexpensive and last a long time
Also you can get some good silver and metallic colours, and it's worth looking into metalcote enamels, too
