Description Liberty Hall was the head office of the I.T.G.W.U.  Irish Transport & General Workers Union, during the 1913 Dublin Lockout trade union strikers were often attacked by strikebreakers and member of the Metropolitan police.

In order to provide some protection it was decided to start a defence squad,  amongst the founders were the trade unionists James Larkin, James Connolly(an ex soldier) and "Capt." Jack White the son of a British Field Marshal, ex-army officer and decorated veteran of the Boer War.

The squad evolved into the Irish Citizens Army and took part in the 1916 Easter Rebellion ~ despite being much smaller than the majority Irish Volunteers the I.C.A. was considered to be much better trained and armed, probably due to all those ex-army vets available to help train the men.
