Description Art trade with . For this art trade, we chose the theme 'hanakotoba', literally "flower words" (more information on hanakotoba ). In hanakotoba each flower has a meaning. I chose the flower 'hirugao' (Calystegia japonica Choisy、English = False Bindweed, Dutch = Dubbelkelkwinde) from this site because it was the flower for the day on which I made the drawing. This flower has the meaning "mild / calm / gentle / quiet / harmonious". But on every hanakotoba site you see different flowers for the same day, so it's not very consistent XD
This flower also grows in China so I thought I could draw the Chinese girl on the image.
The animal around her neck is a hondo stoat. It's a Japanese animal, which travelled to China on board a ship.

The text is my name

This drawing and are companion pieces to 's and .

did sakura / cherry blossom, but has deleted her drawing from DA in the meantime.

Thank you (^-^)
I printed this as a poster-sized image too (50x70 cm) and it still looked nice [the original was A4].

Aww you certainly made a lovely drawing once again. I still envy your water-colouring skills you know.

I really like how the flowers came out, they look lovely. Actually the whole drawing together looks lovely, I really like overall atmosphere and composition.

( The perspective seems a bit odd, I can't really put my finger on it though. )

I really like the detail of your name as the text BTW.

You can colour very nicely too I just decided a few years ago that I was going to use mainly watercolours and not coloured pencils/markers. And I think that if you use mostly watercolours for several years you discover new things so it starts to look better each time XD Though I'm really not fast at colouring.

I think the perspective is because of the plants behind the gate, but I didn't want to put too much detail in there, because it already is quite a busy picture. So there are no real lines in the plants. Next time I'll probably do more with the lighting there, but I don't want to change it in this picture anymore. I still like it this way actually.

I needed text and I didn't want to put something random on it, and this way it is a kind of 'hidden signature' as well XD

Aww thanks for the compliment.
I guess specializing does help a lot indeed.

I guess I should give water colouring a try again this summer vacation, I only tried some techniques and stuff a few months ago, like the effects of salt when it's still wet, and masking fluid.
I tried those techniques after seeing them on this tutorial. ( That artist makes some lovely work btw, you might have come across some of her work on DA before )

Anyway, keep up the good work off course

You didn't make a link... Did you mean 's tutorials? Her watercolours are really good!
I don't have masking fluid XD
The best watercolour book I found was actually one about painting flowers with watercolours. So if you want a book, I suggest searching for a flower-painting book instead of a normal one, even if you don't paint flowers.
With watercolours you just have to remember that you should start with the light colours and that your paper shouldn't be too thin (180 gr/m is minimum, 200 gr/m is better, and higher is always better too).

Whoops apparently I forgot the link, that artists art is amazing BTW I should take a better look at it as sson as I have time.
I actually ment: although I guess is way better.

I guess one of my troubles is when it comes to water colouring and techniques like that, is that I'm kinda of a control-freak when it comes to my work, that's why I usually work with colouring pencils. But I should definitely try this summer, as soon as I have place to work, my work table is such a mess I can't even reach it any more.

Maybe you can try watercolours with something where it doesn't matter that you colour it in one specific way. Things I'm thinking of are landscapes - maybe you can colour the background with watercolours and a person with pencils? Or maybe you can do the colours of the entire picture with watercolours, but then the shading with pencils (wait till the paint has dried, of course), because shading with watercolours is something you need to get used to (it's easier with pencils).
