More Complicated Than Expected ~ 3 It was clear to everyone that Lydia wanted to get the exploration over with, that much Celia knew. The black-spotted kuku had been leading the charge for some time now through twists and turns in the road. Forks and dips downward seemed not to phase the Kukuri as much as they did for the two Kise and handlers, and no vote was taken for where they would go.
“She’s not a fan of caves,” Aitan whispered to Celia as yet another fork was taken with little thought.
“I can see that. Let’s just hope that she doesn’t get us los—”
Celia gasped, the empty space left by her incomplete sentence quickly being overtaken by happy squeaks from Laila and Dabi.
The newly revealed area for the five explorers was altogether too confusing for them. The ground had leveled out, but gigantic lakes dotted the expanse, almost copied by the equally-gargantuan, rough-edged chasms in the ground.

More Complicated Than Expected ~ 2 The researchers had been very interested in what Celia and Aitan had found, so after a good bit of hot debate—interjected at points by Lydia, Laila, and Dabi, of course—the two friends were back in the mysterious cave.
“I’ll be riding Dabi up there,” Celia said, crawling aboard the happy pearl Kise. “Laila should he able to carry the both of you on her back.
Aitan patted Lydia, who didn’t look too happy about the arrangement, and promptly mounted the saddle on the flier’s broad back. His Kukuri had a rougher time finding a hold, but Laila kept very still to give her the best chance of finding her perch. She only made a sharp intake of breath when the Kiki’s sharp claws accidentally draw a scratch on her rump.

More Complicated Than Expected ~ 1 “This looks like the place,” Celia said as they banked over a section of swampy land, soaring high in the air.
Dabi squeaked beneath her, tilting her head for her ear to be scratched. Celia was quick to oblige, despite the slight shaking in their flight, and she was also quick to send Dabi in a downward spiral. Laila screeched and followed them, splashing a few feet away from the lighter kise.
“Good girls,” Celia said, patting Dabi’s neck and tossing a smile Laila’s way.
“Took you long enough,” said a musical voice from somewhere nearby, and the Medushai turned her head to see her friend, Aitan, had already beaten her to the caves on his land-borne mount. Lydia, his pearl Kukuri, waggled her head at Celia and cooed in greeting.
