The description says: "[...]whether they be living, dying or already dead..."
Good Lord! I hope you don't mean the owners of those eyeballs!!
As for the picture, interesting composition, indeed.
By the way, are those 'fresh' eyeballs?
You must have kept them in refridgerator...

mercurium In reply to Krazzt [2007-09-15 21:54:30 +0000 UTC]

hehe You are funny - in some strange way
Of course I wasn't talking about the owners of those eyeballs - those two lines are a symbolic explanation to what does eye(ball) and butterfly stand for.

By the way, nope, those AREn't fresh eyeballs XD I'm not that crazy yet, my family would freak out seeking eyes in the fridge, plus the smell of formalin would be unbearable

But if seriuos, I saw this box of eye prothesises in the Medicine museum year ago around this time and I had an idea which developed to something you can enjoy now.

Thank YOU for an interesting comment!

Well, I was a kind of curious about the origin of those eyeballs...

In my turn, I hope I did get a clear answer of their origin

I agree... butterflies are often souls. Which is why i love this. a Butterfly lying almost impaled on an eyeball? You're wonderfully morbid.

Did you draw this? (silly question XP) I fyou did, great job. Would you hand me some tips? I love the gentle gray you used+negative space. How didyou get the gray so subtle o_o?

mercurium In reply to catewigs [2007-07-17 20:42:42 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your the most peculiar comment I have received on this work and all the good words you wrote!

hehe yup, obviously for submiting itin Traditional category it is drawen by me XD

Will do what I can but first - to what you refer that gray? The negative space or the drawing part? Actually, I'm working /sorta/ on it to make it darker, juicier, 'cos it much lighter here than it is in real life.

catewigs In reply to mercurium [2007-07-24 01:29:47 +0000 UTC]

Er, I think I was referring to the actual eyeballs. You have a special way of making reality delightfully droll >.<...

Peculiar? Well, you deserve all the good back. This is a wonderful peculiar piece itslef ^^

mercurium In reply to catewigs [2007-08-30 17:48:37 +0000 UTC]

Sorry, for month long response First of all, I resubmitted this work (basically, I changed this picture for other - more contrasted - you can see the old one here ).

Secondly, thanks once again for the good words (you are fishing for me you XD)

Now, last but not least, How did I get the gray so subtle? - well, I think the way I work explains it so.. What I start with is going over all the work (shadowing) with F or H pencils makeing the right darkness correspondance among the shadows (but it's still very, very, very light gray). Then I take the darkest of shadows and make it darker, and conforming to it, I make other shadows darker....after some steps of juiceing I take some hard pencil (2-3H) to make objects not entirely white (if they are white, mostly I don't touch them at all) and make light colouring for background, and then again go over the work because I made background darker, right? So what I do I keep an eye on entire picture all the time I work.

Another tip I could give is making not long (unless extremely necessary) strokes and quite close to each other.

I hope this was helpful. Any question, Ms catewigs?

Amazing. ("Eww, eyeballs!" ) What did you started with? Maybe the butterfly?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mercurium In reply to Caesarline [2007-07-14 11:50:53 +0000 UTC]

haha Danke, Bettina!

First I did all the line art - the big forms. Then shading - shading two horizontal upper rows and two vertical rows collumns from left of eyes then it was turn to butterfly with all the details and that eye to shade. Third was going darker over already the shaded eyes and continuing with the rest so that I didn't smudge all the previous shading especially the butterfly. Now - I have no idea how that will be possible but I have to think of something - maybe hanging over the work *hmm..thinking...*....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Caesarline In reply to mercurium [2007-07-14 21:23:31 +0000 UTC]

So you already did now how it would look like? Sounds really good. I for myself am always like "huh, let´s see, what should I draw today... maybe a- girl?!" and then I have the dilemma with the background. My drawings grow on their own, I cannot stop the process.

...

I hope you understand what I´m trying to say

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mercurium In reply to Caesarline [2007-07-15 11:44:28 +0000 UTC]

More or less. Not always, well, almost never it turns out to be exactly as I thought in the begining. During the process I understand that I'm not that good and I can't draw it or at least not today.

That sounds like some fun. I understood, no worries.

Caesarline In reply to mercurium [2007-07-15 19:00:01 +0000 UTC]

I totally agree with that. I have such wonderful ideas- but if I try to draw them, they turn out to be awful, because I´m not skilled in using watermarks, copic markers etc. etc. ... That´s frustrating

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mercurium In reply to Caesarline [2007-07-16 18:48:52 +0000 UTC]

heh I even have no idea what does watermarks OR copic markers mean but you are right, it just makes you feel so tiny and helpless. Well, let's just hope we are better in the future.

Oh, it is - and I'm not even submitting every work here - some are like too medical - perhaps during the year I will submit them after all but..anyway, I think when you will read those Middle Age stories you'll start to draw your own illusrations.

Once again, thanks for kind coment, SS!

mercurium In reply to illusione [2007-07-14 11:37:12 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for every single kind word!

The idea I got long ago visiting Medicine History Museum - they had box of these eyes' prosthesis (what you see is less than 1/4 from that box) and than I somehow connected to my dear butterflies (not really sure how it happened).
