You should call this one 'The Hot Gates'. Just reminds me of 300 and the Persian army marching.

Ohhh I love 300! Just recently rewatched it and loved it even more
Thanks, I will officially call this 'the hot gates' whenever I speak of it

You know, it would be very cool to see some of your more narrative work. If 'the hot gates' is any proof, it would probably look pretty cool.

What do you mean by narrative work? Literature?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mynameiscaleb In reply to mercurycode [2014-05-26 22:41:42 +0000 UTC]

Oh i meant story wise. Because at the moment you are just doing backgrounds but this one seemed to be a scene from 300 in my mind. What I meant was it would be great to see you do work where you are actually drawing -say horsemen. That would be narrative work because you are telling us something. i.e. "hey, i drew some horses!"

oh, wait. where you being sarcastic?   it's too early for deviant comments!

mercurycode In reply to mynameiscaleb [2014-05-27 15:08:46 +0000 UTC]

The way I look at it - it's not "just backgrounds", it's expressing myself through abstract art. I am already telling a story by creating an atmosphere or a feeling that goes with a texture. If that inspires others to add figures and turn the abstract artwork into something surreal, they are welcome to do it But that's up to them. As much as I like looking at photomanipulations, I have no desire to create those myself because in some way I can't explain, it makes me feel limited. I feel like my textures are very narrative, just in an abstract way, no figures or landscapes. Turning them into a manip would be narrative as well, but on a surreal level of narration.

hey, that's gotta be one of the most thoughtful replies i have ever gotten not just in deviant but thinking back to my years in art school as well.
you know you are right in saying that your work is more than 'just backgrounds' it was a bit short sighted of me to say that.
i think it makes sense that a narrative piece might limit you, but i never imagined you would do photo manipulation to accomplish that. for example when i saw the hot gates, i thought it felt very close to a painting. so maybe you could think of using paint on your surfaces.
a great artist can always know his or her limitations, so its good you don't want to try something you feel might limit you... but... don't let that limit you to only doing one thing either.

mercurycode In reply to mynameiscaleb [2014-05-28 11:06:38 +0000 UTC]

Really? Well, I'll thake that as a compliment

Using paint is not a bad thought, therefore I'd have to buy it, create structures which will work within a texture and find a scanner which will get me high quality scans. I might consider that at a point when I have the resources (which I currently don't). It might add to my textures, so I'll keep it in mind!

mynameiscaleb In reply to mercurycode [2014-05-30 00:26:33 +0000 UTC]

yeah, scanners, specially the nice ones are quite pricy... and bulky. I did photography in University and this is back in the day when digital still sucked, so it was all film. hundreds of negs. specially after my first year here in Taiwan. and i finally bought a nice neg scanner and even though i got a good price for it, it's so big! i think if i were to take my the macs and iPads in my home and stack them on top of each other, the scanner would still be taller.

hey you know what?  i think the problem is me here! I had a look at some of your recent textures and right away  i could visualize something in them. so i think the problem is my mind. haha

i thought i would post a comment on each to mention what they looked like to me, but then i thought that would be annoying. so i didn't. oh and also, they look great!

I finally had a look at your profile as well-- you are a girl!!   a haha, i, ah, knew that.

mercurycode In reply to mynameiscaleb [2014-05-30 11:16:36 +0000 UTC]

Hey, I don't think there is any problem at all I'm always so fascinated by what people see in them so if you'd like to share your thesis, I'd love to know about them! Please don't think of it as being annoying.

Funny thing is that everyone who hasn't seen my ID yet thinks I'm a guy. Actually, the comment I answered right before yours was calling me "good Sir". Which is kinda funny. At least my ID didn't leave any doubts about my gender, so that's a relief

Oh, that scanner sounds huge. Maybe you could through a blanket on top and use it as your dinner table.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mynameiscaleb In reply to mercurycode [2014-05-31 03:12:41 +0000 UTC]

well, the scanner is taking up a whole small table next to my desk. but i gotta say, there's a reason they are so bulky. it's been one of my all time favorite purchases. the rich quality scan you get from that compared to a $60 US common scanner is literally night and day. when it scans an old picture, you see on your screen and yeah, you can see the grain from the original neg but you also get these HD colors.

Now you just reminded me of the pilot from The Office US. Not sure if you get/got this show in Germany but anyway, there's a part where Michael Scott is on the phone with someone about some job interview and he is pretending to be great friends with the person on the phone in front of some other employee that is sitting in his office... and he ends the conversation with the person on the phone with: "Thank you, yes, yes.... you sir, are a gentleman and a scholar!.... yes, uh-huh.. ah, ok--great!, bye bye" CLICK

He looks down at the phone without looking at his employee and he is like: "..that.... was a woman."

How much did you spend on that thing?

Oh, that's funny because just a few days ago I tried watching the pilot of The Office. Yes, tried... I gotta say, the first ten minutes or so didn't even trigger a smile on me.
We have a German equivalent to the Series called Stromberg, and it's basically the only good German TV Series there is. And the main actor just is naturally so hilarious that I was expecting a lot more from the US version, being the inspiration and all.

I think I spent $200 Canadian which is almost the same as UD at the time. It's an Epson Perfection. Great Purchase. Specially as i mentioned before, all my old negs. Nowadays I still use it to scan my comic book pages. I bought it from this awesome site in Toronto (that sadly closed) where it worked like ordering Pizza. You would order your Scanner or printer or computer and some dude would show up at your door a couple hours later with your purchase (obviously from the warehouse). But what was really funny is that the site itself discouraged you from tipping the delivery guys. But I couldn't help myself so i still gave the guy a couple bucks.
Now I live in Taiwan and here there is absolutely no tipping at all. Having worked in the restaurant industry in Toronto where you provide the best costumer service possible (fancy restaurant) so you can get the best tip possible, it's bizarre to be here where people work so hard to make you happy and where not only do they not expect a tip but more often than not, they will refuse it if you offer it..... except the pizza hut guy.

I won't even know where to begin!

But if you ever have an opportunity to come visit, you totally should! Oh I know, napping at work is OK here! So after you have lunch, you get nap time so all lights in the offices are dim down, people have small pillows in their desk. Even small blankets. And pretty much from 12:45 to 1:15, most people nap. Then lights go back on and back to work til very late. 6-7 pm. Some of the high school teachers here, since they will be with their kids until 8pm, take a second nap.

But the thing is, you don't wait til nap time sometimes. If you have a spare and you are tired, you take a nap. So often i come into the office and some of the coworkers are working but the odd one is napping. Anyway, getting sleepy now, haha.

I'm not a big fan of authentic Chinese food. Some people are but I am not one of them. It's not what you find back home in westernized Chinese restaurants. I usually go for Indian, Thai or Vietnamese but i steer away from Chinese.
