Mousse has spent a great deal of time wandering. He remembers having loved it at some point, but over the years he has grown resentful over those who stayed put. He remembers seeing people settling down and growing old together and mocking them but now he can't help but long for the stability they had and the bonds they forged.

About 40 years ago in France Mousse fell in love with a beautiful young sugar-spinner named Marie. They met when Mousse tried to steal one of her sugar sculptures,it looked so beautiful and delicious that he couldn't help himself. Marie was much more cunning than anyone mousse had ever tried to trick before and she caught him in the act. She was so friendly with him even though he was trying to steal her art, and for the first time Mousse felt close to someone. He offered to make up for the attempted theft by making her dinner and she happily accepted. She found him to be absolutely charming and far more interesting than the rest of the men in her small town and they started to date.

A few years passed and Mousse finally had the courage to confess his love to her. He told her that he wanted to spend their lives together and it turned out that was what she wanted too. They were married almost immediately. She made him plenty of sweets and he helped out around the shop, they were perfect for each other.

After 12 years of marriage Marie became quite depressed, her husband stayed so young and beautiful while she grew old and wrinkled. She had known this would happen eventually but she didn't realise how much it would hurt. Mousse tried to cheer her up, he would cook her all of her favourite foods, he would sing to her and stroke her hair but it only made things worse. It only heightened the contrast between the two of them, how could he be so sweet and she so bitter?

One day she sent him out to the market to get sweet potatoes and while he was gone she killed herself. She left a note on their table. "I love you more than you could possibly imagine Mousse but I can't watch myself wither away next to you. I am holding you back and I can no longer stand it. I am terribly sorry, I love you."

Mousse spent several years wandering around aimlessly, mourning the loss of his beloved wife before deciding he needed to stay somewhere, he needed stability again. He needed to learn to become normal. That's when he decided to enrol at Ellewood Academy.
