It really is unfortunate we don't get to really see the time she exists in properly because everything is all time jumbled up and confused.

 As far as Ultimecia goes I liked the time traveling sorceress thing, because with Laguna dreams in Winhill and Eshtar (however you spell it) and then Squall's time, Ultimecia does have a reason for being in the game that makes sense. She wants to prevent her own death at the hands of seed by compressing time.

Now what Ultimecia's world must be like is up for debate but key in game scenes do hint at what it would be like.

Dr Odine and sorceress Adel during her reign were looking for a way to identify the sorceress gene, that's why Adel was kidnapping children in the first place and why Ellone was of interest to her. She kidnapped Ellone, Laguna went to savesavecdncache-a.akamaihd.net/items/… "> her and managed to freefree Eshtar at the same time. That's also kind of the point like while Ellone is searching for her answersanswerscdncache-a.akamaihd.net/items/… ">, we see what happened with Squall's origins but also what was going to cause the future problem in Squall's time.

Because while Adel was sealed in the tomb and shot into space, Odine obviously continued his research into the sorceress gene and managed to identify it. Which we know because he determines Rinoa is a sorceress, the officials tell Squall over the radio that she is one during the Ragnarok 'eyes on me' scene.

So what do we know

1) Adel was looking to locate and identify the sorceress gene.
2) Odine between then and now (which we know from in game is 17 years difference) has successfully identified it by Squall's time, because we find out Rinoa is a sorceress from Eshtar officials.
3) Ultimecia is from a future time many generations apart from Squall's own. (which are Dr Odine's own words)
4) Seed existexistcdncache-a.akamaihd.net/items/… "> still in Ultimecia's time you find their bodies on the beach when you arrive in her time.


That is all based off in game information. This next part is not concrete and more what I suspect it must be like. Considering the world of FF8 is technologically advanced, Eshtar certainly is. Ultimecia is from a time period far in the future. where their technology would have advancedadvanced considerably by that time. And yet the ability to locate the sorceress gene in people is identified in Squall's time period.

From that I think it would be a pretty awful world  into which to be born a sorceress. That is even if Ultimecia was born a sorceress and didn't just gain her powers by coming across another one near death.  Imagine if they screen children at birth for the sorceress gene or have scanners that can trace it? Consider still that Seed existexistcdncache-a.akamaihd.net/items/… "> in her time and their entire reason for being created is to kill her kind.

What kind of future world would that be like? And how ruthless would you become in order to survive in a world like it. Since Edea herself created Seed deliberately to kill her own kind, I think Ultimecia would consider her actions a betrayal I also think that is why she targeted Seifer because he was one of Edea's children that she raised. Striking at the heart of her host body.

Ultimecia was most likely a normal human at one point in her life but by the time you know her she is a tyrant that kills without remorse or mercymercycdncache-a.akamaihd.net/items/… ">. It's possible Ultimecia was always power hungry and evil. However from reasoning out what the future must be like where she is from I doubt it. I think she became evil over time as a means of survival.

She obviously feared the prophecy about her death enough to traveltravelcdncache-a.akamaihd.net/items/… "> back in time. Therefore I think it is safe to say she is somewhat paranoid about being killed, maybe justifiably paranoid but still it's a lot of effort to go to just for a prophecy you don't even know will come true.

Her speeches in Deling City (both English and Japanese which are entirely different by the way, the Japanese one is far moremorecdncache-a.akamaihd.net/items/… "> revealing of her feelings about humanity and her intentions, while the english is more vengeful and angry) also mention the persecution of witches by ordinary people believingbelievingcdncache-a.akamaihd.net/items/… "> them to be evil. I think this adds even more weight to the theory that she has been made into what she is due to her time period. So English first

Ultimecia does mention it at Galbadia Garden whilst possessing Edea and Squall says 'What is she talking about'. I really think the mistake they made was not revealing Ultimecia's presence on disk 2 because it felt rushed when we were told about her. Rather than wasting time explaining how the main party apparently grew up together how about making them a team of mercenaries who come from all over the place and instead use the time to explain Ultimecia's motivations you know as the villain of the game. I just wanted to shake Square for all the detouring from the plot on disc two.
