Very nice. It says you used watercolors and acrylics for this... which did you use where?

It's mostly watercolor. I inked some of the lines in colored acrylics, and then it's painted mostly with watercolor. The only other acrylic is for some of the darker shadows and details. Mostly because I could not get the right amount of contrast with watercolor sometimes.

Ok, well it looks great! I've never tried using both acrylics and watercolor, though I have watered down my acrylics occasionally so that they practically are watercolors.

As long as you finish what you like with the watercolor first you can go over it with acrylic with no problem. For example if you need an extra layer of color and you know using more watercolor will make the paint lift up it works well.

I thought of it because years ago I learned Kinuko Craft's technique, but it is too involved for me. She uses watercolor, seals it with clear acrylic and uses oils over the top. So I wanted to try that with acrylic because it would dry faster and I don't have to worry about the oils ruining the paper.

Beautiful drawing, a real beauty.
Gentle posture, elegance and beautiful, I like the style of the youth is very reflected in the image, even so I love it but also because of the beautiful women with their beauty.
And the composition of the Oriental, is a dream, so what makes the image alive.

Minor proportion issues aside (the hands seem a bit small and the foreground shin appears too long), gorgeous piece. The fabric is in a word, awesome. You pulled off the sheer fabrics flawlessly....Nice.

Gorgeous blues! What kind do you use? Cobalt or ultramarine?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MeredithDillman In reply to suburbanbeatnik [2010-02-12 04:49:58 +0000 UTC]

I think that was some cobalt and some pthalo blue

Cool! What is your technique? What kind of paper do you paint on?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MeredithDillman In reply to suburbanbeatnik [2010-02-12 05:36:13 +0000 UTC]

That was Sennellier, which I can't afford to buy any more of since I found it on clearance But usually I use hot press Arches or Fabriano (which my local store just stopped stocking). Might be a couple WIP pics here [link]

The only thing I did differently with this was ink the lines in different colors with acrylic. Then there's a layer or acrylic details over some of it as the last step, otherwise it's all watercolor.

That's cool. My rep has been complaining that my pictures are beginning to look alike. "I've seen this blue before!" she said recently. I have a certain style and method of working, and I wonder how I can change it up a little... Different paper? Different blues? I don't know...

MeredithDillman In reply to suburbanbeatnik [2010-02-14 20:35:58 +0000 UTC]

so cool you have a rep

Try layering more than one blue maybe? I find the same thing happens. I get obsessed with one color for a while.

suburbanbeatnik In reply to MeredithDillman [2010-02-14 23:06:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! It's for children's books only, so I have to rep myself in all other fields, which is... really hard.

But yeah, when it comes to blues, I usually mix cobalt, ultramarine blue and titanium white liquitex acrylics. That's become my default sky color. I have pthalo blue, but I've never used it! I wonder how that would look...

What other blues do you use?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MeredithDillman In reply to suburbanbeatnik [2010-02-15 21:55:32 +0000 UTC]

That's still nice. I'd love to do Children's books.

I have Ultramarine but I don't think I've used it much. I had only Cobalt for so many years anyway. I usually just keep cobalt and pthalo in my palette and add others when I need to.

Middle part of the sky there looks like pthalo and the upper part might be cobalt. Or I may have mixed in some purple. Her skirt is probably Cobalt Teal. Other darker blue I have is Anthraquinone Blue. Purple mixed with pthalo usually makes a nice color.
