I love everything about this! The superb shading, the background.... The subtle, yet noticeable, shape of the cheeks and nose look absolutely amazing. The cloudy gloom in the eyes is exquisite and pulls together the whole expression. There is a surprising depth of emotion in this piece, regardless of the relative simplicity of the style. Every little thing, from the curve of the eyebrows to the mouth, expresses Pearl's regret and misery perfectly.
