Description
Living in a rental home, with a bit of yard, I have planted plants like hostas and phlox about but I also nurture what came with the space and a handful of these particular daylilys came with the property (along with a lot of another lily, possibly another species of daylily.) I am guilty of taking this type for granted. Their colors are delicate and subtle and their shape is graceful. The colors of the stems and unopened blooms are a rich green and greenish yellow. They are now blooming as the end of June approaches.
A daylily or day lily is a flowering plant in the genus Hemerocallis / ˌhɛmɪroʊˈkælɪs/,[2] a member of the family Asphodelaceae , subfamily Hemerocallidoideae . Despite the common name, it is not in fact a lily . Gardening enthusiasts and horticulturists have long bred daylily species for their attractive flowers . Thousands of cultivars have been registered by local and international Hemerocallis societies.[3]
The name Hemerocallis comes from the Greek words ἡμέρα (hēmera) "day" and καλός (kalos) "beautiful".
