Description Another Steamy-punky-goggling wolf. I'm having so much fun with this theme.

This is an idea I've had for a while now; animal masks with cogs and goggle parts decorating them, making them into Steampunk critters ready to wear to your next convention (or Mardi Gras, or Halloween, or just out at a club even...).

With one red "Cog-Monocle" eye, though, he really is an updated version of the Big Bad Wolf. "All The Better To See You With..."

I'm intending to do a series of these. Just like real wolves, no two will be alike. This particular wolf (version #2) is available here: [link]

Made of hand carved leather, goggle parts, brass fittings, brass clock parts, ingenuity and love.

OOOH I like that. The starkness really sets off the goggle well and the overall piece almost looks as if the animal is slowly becoming the machine.

Thank you. Yeah that's sort of what I was thinking about when I added some of those machine elements to the realistically carved design...kind of a blend of organic & inorganic.

Do you sell just the plain masks? Or do you buy them somewhere else?

Heck no. It's all my own art. It started out as a piece of plain old flat leather.

I have a shop with wolves that aren't wearing cogs/goggles...link in my sig.

To go off on a slight tangent here: I feel like every time someone wants to make something steampunk, they put some cogs and goggles on it and call it a day.

It's cool, yes. But I wanna see someone think outside the box. This could be so much cooler and more exciting.

inb4 "well I don't see YOU doing anything!" You're right, I don't do this kind of stuff because I'm bad at it, no lie. Doesn't mean I can't see it in my head, though.

merimask In reply to Crimm-Art [2012-01-04 17:27:29 +0000 UTC]

Well, true enough. Frankly I'd rather call it something like "Industrial Art" or something like that. But you just know if I did I'd have a hundred thousand kids saying "great Steampunk!" so, whatever. I just like brassy clock parts (because they are complicated circles and they are pretty) and goggles with brightly-colored lenses.

I thought, though, that the single goggle, paired with a hand-carved leather wolf mask, was kind of different. Maybe it needs freakin' laser beams to shoot out of the eyes...?

Crimm-Art In reply to merimask [2012-01-04 17:44:49 +0000 UTC]

It's different, but I feel like it's just the start of something. I think part of it is that the lines on the wolf's head feel like they're sketched guidelines or something. From there I guess you could either clean them up and make them more natural looking, or you could make it look... robotic? Not the word I'm looking for but, you could make it look like they're pieces of leather fitted together, where the lines are more clean and less indicative of fur. If that makes any sense.

Or you could do something completely different from either of those, I don't know. It just looks like it's the basis of something greater.

And hey, if you had the technical know-how to make it shoot laser beams, then what are you doing making plain old masks? You should be getting into the super-villain business.

I love the idea of it. I bet with some brass pieces, sheeting and paper mache you could make these into functional masks. Even add faux fur to it.

....is this... real life??? T.T really that is AWESOME... I love these kind of "opera masks" (I don't know the "correct" term if there is one), and that was very creative...Do you actually sell your pieces? Well ironically if you do it would problably make such a huge success that it would lose part of its magic T.T

I am loving the contrast between the bright white wolf and the red goggle-eye on this - and the little brassy cog-details. It works beautifully.

Where do you get your brass clock parts? I've been looking into making my own steampunk knick-knacks, but most of my projects have been temporarily shelved because I don't know where to get ahold of brass cogs.

merimask In reply to smokewithoutmirrors [2012-01-03 18:08:05 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

Well, initially I tried actually taking apart an old clock...which would have been fine except the cogs are welded to the rods. So it didn't really result in stuff I could use. :/

But then I found this guy on Etsy: [link]
He ships really really fast, the cogs are awesome and unused so nothing is yukky or bent, and compared to dismantling a whole clock for one or two old useable parts, his prices are fair. His name is Peter...make sure you let him know Merimask sent you.
