Description Here is a new design...the Lady Bast (Egyptian cat goddess of music, dancing and fertility) depicted with African Wildcat markings.

This mask is carved from one piece of 8oz tooling leather. Like all my masks, it is hand carved and shaped with no molds or forms, heat-set, and painted with colorfast Liquitex acrylics in antiqued medium brown, white and sepia with gold accents.

If you think about it, the African Wildcat is a good choice to use as inspiration for Bast, because these little wild cats are probably very similar in appearance to the first domesticated cats in Egypt. The source pictures I've seen show them in light & dark phases...this one is "light" with pale brown stripes.

Signed, dated & numbered, this "Wildcat Bast #2", commissioned from my online Etsy shop: [link]

I like this one more than the one with darker stripes. It blends better. It just popped! Both are lovely though.

The pale color scheme is so elegant with this new design. Also love the balance of natural vs. stylized!

I contemplated beefing up the outlines of the gold "Egyptian motif" details, but in the end I left it subtle. It blends so neatly, you really have to study the mask to see the parts that take her from "cat" to "goddess".

I don't know why, but I really like this one compare to the other one. The markings seem more sand coloured and more elegant, something you expect from an an Egyptian cat goddess!!

Thank you. She is a sandy-colored cat I agree...like something you might see prowling in the dunes of the Sahara...

I'm leaning toward liking this one more, but I think it's because dangly things annoy me. They're both quite lovely with such wonderful stripe patterns! They remind me of flames and the ear patterns remind me of sun rays.

merimask In reply to lonewylfe [2010-07-08 23:04:48 +0000 UTC]

The ear design is actually called a "sun ray motif" that you see all the time in Egyptian art. The sun god Ra was sort of the "chief" god and all the other gods incorporate his sun rays somewhere in their designs.

yay! I've missed seeing your masks in my deviations feed.

What always gets me about your masks is the fur detail. It's so intricate and it really does add extra realism to them.

Treyos [2010-07-08 12:36:27 +0000 UTC]

I'm liking this one better; the stripes are more subtle. The darker ones stand out more, but seem a bit distracting from the overall look. Love the ear design, btw. =^_^=

merimask In reply to Treyos [2010-07-08 13:18:56 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. Yep, the sun-ray motif is so quintessentially Egyptian that I had to do the ears that way.

I love how you draw your designs from real animals, it makes them that much cooler! I am always amazed at your skill, and your patience, it must take forever to carve all of those hairs! I think the finished product is worth it though, truly stunning.

The combination of the gold egypt patterns together with the real looking fur is great. I like this one best, but both light and dark versions are really nice.

This one is a bit more monochromatic. I think if the wearer is going to wear some kind of all-gold gown this one is absolutely perfect.
