Description This was what killed illustrator class for me >.<
I got really stubborn and determined to do the class assignment my creative way, and ended up falling waaayyy behind. alas.
Some of you may remember this: [link]
well, I colored it with the magical pen tool :3 I must say, that I really enjoyed my experience with illustrator. Even though this took A REALLY LONG TIME it was worth it once I got the hang of all those magical gradients and strokes.

ugh... I don't know if i should have watermarked it over her face....... I know I'm super paranoid, but I'm just always worried that my work would end up as an avatar in a forum or as somebody's Mary Sue RP nightmare >.< paranoia... bad thing....

but yeah... this was at least 12 hours of illustrator work with cs3. I hope you likes it!

Khimer belongs to ~Fireclaw

I don't even know anymore as to whether to call these types of merpeople anthro or not, but there's no fantasy for vector, so I chose the next closest thing

To be completely honest, I think you did really good with this (I know this is a rather late crit, but I’m just getting back into the art loop, so I do apologize). I really like the pose you’ve given her here—it’s very flowing and not awkward at all. I especially like the positioning of her hands and the shell you’ve placed in her hand—the inclusion of the same gold-yellow color you used for her hair really balances out the piece. Great detailing on her braids, as well—that had to take a ridiculous amount of time.

Critique-wise, there’s only a few nitpicks I’m going to mention. The hair is fantastic, as I’ve said above, but the way you’ve drawn it makes it look like the hair follicles are going down her neck or that her neck is very thin. Either by giving her more hair to the right (our right) or by giving her more of a neck would fix that. As for her hands, the leftmost one appears to be a tad too short in relation to the hand holding the shell. As well as this, the rightmost part of her face appears to be a bit too slanted—her eye appears as if it’s almost floating off of her face. By adding just a tiny bit of cheek below her eye would make it appear a bit more proportionate—but only a sliver. The last thing I can add is though I absolutely love the red of her body, a tiny bit of blue (the scales reflecting the ocean’s color) at the very edges of her body would make her fit into the image rather than looking as if she was slapped on the top of the background, so to say. An example is here . Regardless, I think this is a fantastic piece.

Man, illustrator is a bitch. I had a really hard time with it and I was just doing some technical drawings.

This is really great, though! I love all the details in the hair and the spots. Your color choices are beautiful, too. I love red + gold. The lineweights and gradients all look pretty awesome, too.

Thank you very much! <3
I really thought the same thing about illustrator too, but the more I worked with it, the more I came to like it. I can't "draw" in it though. I gotta trace whatever I'm going for, otherwise, it's too tough >.<

I used a tablet + pen tool when I drew with Illustrator, but it was frustrating and pretty slow. Wouldn't really recommend it unless you've got a looot of time to figure it all out.
