Description Since i've been fascinated by all things horror and macabre since childhood, especially the creatures and stories based on Lovecraft's magnificent works (which i discovered a few years later), i started drawing my own versions of Cthulhu, Father Dagon, Mother Hydra, the Deep ones... A few weeks ago i decided to draw all my Lovecraft-related works in one book. I didn't dared yet to "age" my pages, so i better start practice on some blank pages before i mess my finished ones up!

(sorry for the bad English if weird scribblings should appear)

What medium did you use? What script is that?

All was handwritten with Staedtler pens.

OH!! That notebook contains pure awesome-ness!! I that Deep One in the bottom of the page.

Just like you, I've always loved everything that was creepy/macabre since I was a baby (god! since age 3 I watched Dark Crystal over and over again just to see the Skeksis!!) and I only discovered HPL and the Cthulhu mythos some 3-4 years ago (and been in love with them ever since!)

Thanks for the comment! I had seen lots of horrormovies before i discovered Lovecraft's work, and then realised that all the best stuff out there was more or less inspired by his works. (The Thing, In The Mouth Of Madness, The Unnamable,...)
You should take a look at Mariano Baino's Dark Waters i you haven't already. An original story, but heavily inspired by Lovecraft. The best homage around if you ask me!

Yep, I'm surprised that I keep finding references to Lovecraft in all kinds of media, not just horror movies (hell, I've heard Cthulhu even makes an appearence in an episode of Spongebob Squarepants, wtf?)

That's for recommending it, I'll definitely check it out!!

"which i discovered a few years later"
It's "fun", that's exactly what happened to me. I'm glad to know I'm not alone ^^

Anyway, the beginning of the grimoire you show us is just amazing. Beautiful font, amazing drawings... I'm in awe.
Good continuation, it should not always be easy to draw! I hope someday you'll be able to publish it

Thanks for the comments! Drawing them in ink doesn't work as fast as using pencils, but i'm not in a hurry. Two new pages coming up one of these days.

Absolutely stunning!

Thanks! I was glad with the outcome when these pages were finished, but there's always room for improvement.

Could you release a PDF version of this book when finished? It could become really popular.

I am assuming this is the necronomicon?

It's dealing with the Cthulhu mythos, but i wouldn't call it the Necronomicon as that one deals with other things and critters. I'm thinking about sending it to a few publishers whenever it's finished, but due to several other projects it's going to take quite a time to complete this book. I want all artwork to be like this, not something made in a rush.

This project looks amazing!

Merlin, this is written by hand and during the way, i blended a few fonts and added a personal touch to make the writing faster and to make it look better. Can't say which font comes the closest to these scribblings. I'm glad you al like it!

beautiful work! If the ink is waterproof, I would suggest perhaps some light staining with watercolors or ink. But certainly letting the pages fade a little in direct sunlight for a couple of weeks should help without doing any damage.

Thanks for the hint! I'll try a few things out one of these days, and see what fits these pages the most.

Looking forward to seeing more!

Oh, and the first line in my previous comment should have read, "But now I'm afraid to add art..."

Stupid typos.

Thx for the comments! And HerbertW, i did skip a few pages when i started and already noticed the change of writing-details during the process. Even the drawings changed during the past few weeks, from dark to more detailed. When i find the time, i finish up some older pages and present them here.

I know just how you feel. I spent months making my own creepy old aged book. But now I'm afraid to add for for fear of messing it up. To be honest though, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

One tip I read is to start drawing in the middle of the book. That way the first thing people see will be your newer, better work.

like really fine detailing pens fro this?
i love this

👍: 1 ⏩: 1

meroth In reply to dallinman [2011-07-22 18:17:49 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I used 3 sorts of pens (pigment liners from Staedtler). 0.4 for the writing, 0.1 for some details on the writing and 0.2 for the drawings.

Glad you like it!
