Description “Stages of Life”
MMMMMORE MERTON MMMMM Series
(Merton’s latest grouping of pieces in his Maxi Meaningful Mixed Media Series)

NOTES ON THIS PARTICULAR PIECE IN THIS SERIES:

“Stages of Life,” shows four nude, male figures, progressing in age, in various trajectories with a sun, out in space. One young adult figure holds on his shoulder a large, over-sized pocket watch. Another, the youngest, holds in his hand a small pocket watch. A forty/fifty-ish figure has a bit of a pad or waddle under his chin. The oldest figure, bearded, peeks around the sun. So it is a piece about life, aging, etc. It shows (sort of humorously and metaphorically) a progression of our various selves, as we age and live with time, our bodies, etc.

NOTES ON THIS PARTICULAR GROUPING IN THIS SERIES
(THIS LATEST INSTALLMENT OF PIECES IN THIS SERIES)

I am working on five art pieces of varying sizes, progressing from small to big. They all are were begun in pencil form, then inked, then colorized in mixed media (colored pencil, pastel, Copic marker, Copic airbrush, etc.)… my usual pastiche.

One piece of the five, the biggest, is called, "If I were a ghost" and features a handsome zippy figure out in space, zipping about with stars and comets, above the earth. It is appealing, I think, with its large, airbrushed space-scape, and brings to life the frequent thoughts I have about where I might go and what I might do if “I” were a ghost.

The next, slightly smaller piece is a self portrait of me drawing and is entitled “Muse ‘n the Moon.” It shows me lying nude on the bed, large artpad on my tummy, with my bedside lamp at my side, a sun partially executed on the pad, and the moon with a ghostly tree branch in the window just past my reclining figure.

The next smaller piece is called "Sorrow and the Peace Fairy." It is a long narrow work, with a nude figure reclining on its tummy, resting its head in a pillow, as the "Peace Fairy" whooshes (healing, we assume) dust all about the personage.

The next smaller piece, another long narrow one, is my "Save the Planet Mobile." It puts into visual form my ideas concerning the virtues of small, ecological, moveable houses, which could, with different laws and zoning, help people on earth have smaller ecological footprints (and save the planet... before it is too late... which it might, sadly, already be).

The smallest piece, entitled “Stages of Life,” shows four nude, male figures, progressing in age, in various trajectories with a sun, out in space.

All but the last are generally pretty big in size, even though they vary in dimension. So, they are included in/added to my MMMMM Series (Merton Maxi Meaningful Mixed Media Series) ([link] ). They are the latest installments in this evolving series.

NOTES ON THIS SERIES:

The MMMMM Series (Merton Maxi Meaningful Mixed Media Series) was begun in 2011 by myself, Merton Parrish, in my “house of many studios.” I completed it mostly in my bedroom studio, where I spend a great deal of time lately (and in which I now, with some recent modifications, can draw, ink, traditionally colorize, photograph, scan, edit and post). Some of the work, however, was done in the den drawing studio, during tv with hubby, or late at night when I could not sleep and needed not to wake hubby with a bright “art light,” marker/pencil scratches/squeaks, airbrush “pssssh’es,” etc.

The series consists of large (“maxi”) mixed media works which tend to be on meaningful themes (to Mertons and other humans). These were originally pencil drawings on large, frequently recycled art boards, cardboards, or painted/gessoed-over prints in large frames. After the pencil drawings were finished (as is common with me of late) the pieces were inked with fine black pen. Then, they were colorized traditionally (by hand) with mediums from amongst the following list:

*colored pencil
*pastel pencil
*Copic markers
*Copic marker with aircan airbrush attachment

This series, like many of my groupings of original art, may be added to in the future. I rather enjoyed doing these large, “maxi” works, and feel that their size adds to their impact. The pieces are anywhere from about the dimensions of a big fish (think exaggerating fishermen, saying, “It was THIS big!”) to several which fit in some nice, big frames purchased by my parents at a hoighty toighty furniture store (the sort of frames designed to hold large art prints and take up substantial wall space behind a couch). So, the larger pieces in the series are pretty good size.

Now, if I can only figure out a way to do some of those REALLY big art pieces… the kind one sees covering entire walls of a certain, ever-present coffee house chain, of great renown. That would be cool. Maybe I can talk hubby into turning our garage into a big art studio, after all. Hmmm… “It could happen!” as comedian Judy Tenuta would say! Wink.

I can dream, can’t I?

(I should get busy manifesting and follow my own rhetoric, now shouldn’t I!?!

a beautiful representation of subject. I like how the men are so abstract and yet so sexy still. Great amounts of skill and attention to detail in this piece

I am so glad you like it. I like this one a lot. It sits on a little stool in the bedroom.

Awesome, again, colours just pop out, looks amazing! So different from the previous set, which so subtle and dreamy, this set is vibrant! Interesting that the young man appears to be burned with time, while the youngest is not...then in middle age you let go and relax about it. Interesting you chose to have their eyes closed...

I am glad you like this set and this piece. I like this set and this piece too. I did the drawing for this by the pool at the spa (I got back to the spa, with hubby, recently... we'll see if I can keep going... it wore me out getting there, though I enjoyed it).

This piece came right out of my subconscious... no plan. But it new what it wanted to become and the theme became more and more apparent (with all its details) as it emerged. I colorized it at home, and it "wanted" to be very vibrant, didn't it?!?

I think the closed eyes were a combination of a peaceful feel to the work, the work emerging as it wanted to be, and its simply much easier technically to have their eyes closed... lol... wink. Silly, lazy Merton!

Good for you for the spa thing!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I used to walk and now nothing drag me out...I keep saying if only I had time...I'm sure I could if I really put my mind to it...maybe I need to get a paper route again...

LOL, the eyes, I get you now! I thought there was some meaning in it as in not wanting to make eye contact or just tuning into one's own thoughts, or something!

I did enjoy it, though I really only got in the whirlpool and then drew and read by the side of the big pool. It wore me out though. I had a big week with two spa visits, dentist visit, realization I needed to go to the doctor, doctor visit, art store visit, working the new art desk into the bedroom studio, usual chores and teaching, etc. It was too much. Once again, I realize that I need to not leave the house except a few times a year for doctor appointments, daily potty jaunt with doggie, and occasionally with hubby for a dinner out. The spa is too difficult, except very, very occasionally.

I'm sorry to hear it was so difficult for you. I am very much like you, I get wiped of all energy 'out there'. I can have all this energy, and plans on what I am going to get done, then I need to run an errand, and I come home wiped. Usually if there are crowds and line ups and lots of traffic. Running (and I really mean sitting in the car driving) to Safeway late at night when the streets are empty, shopping in an empty store, and going right to the check out where the clerk is waiting just for me does not wipe me out the same way at all. I think it is all that people energy out there that does it...maybe you are an 'empath'...I got that term from youtube, LOL!! I'm not sure I believe there is such a thing...but maybe there is.

Yes, yes, I agree! Late at night when no one is around is much better! Lol.

"No public!" as a friend of mine used to say. Lol. Do not mean to sound like a misanthrope!

As for the empath stuff... I do think I sort of pick up on people's energy sometimes, and that can be exhausting. There is a neat episode of Star Trek, and old one, called The Empath (I think that was the title). It is really cool.

I'll need to find that episode and watch it, why don't I remember that one, I thought I'd seen them all many times!!

I can pick up people's energy too. Most people are very 'normal' energy wise, in a non noticable way, but I've met a few rare people who seem to have unusually good energy, you can almost physically feel it as warmth! I have also spoken to few people with extremely negative energy, and I've got a physical effect from them...when I was on the escalation line there was one lady that was negative(not a normal angry but reasonable but more on the mentally ill side completely out of reasonable bounds)...after a few minutes on the line with her I felt an electric current go through my body that shook me so badly I thought my heart would stop, and my eyes lost all focus for a moment, I saw everything shaking as if in an earthquake...one and only time that has happened...I don't normally go around getting electric currents through m, lol! I was not shocked my me headset or anything like that but it was all her energy that did that...I'm totally convinced of that! It is amazing how much uncontrollable anger people want to hold on to.

What a fascinating story. I do think that some folk's energy is very strong, and those sensitive to it can pick it up!
