And so, Bro Month comes to a close! You didn't think I forgot about the most famous bro of all, did you?

Bro Month ends, fittingly enough, at the beginning. Luigi is definitely my earliest and longest-standing bro by far, and without a doubt one of the very first fictional characters that I ever took a shine to!

I spent an embarrassingly large amount of my formative years watching reruns of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show that my dad had taped off the TV. And while the late Danny Wells' performance as Luigi is certainly a huge factor, it's hardly what made me a Luigi fan in the first place. I was already a big fan of this guy; I loved his wiggly-leg jump in Super Mario Bros. 2, and in SMB1 and 3, there was just something mystifying to me about the concept of "Player 2." The idea that there was this other character you could play as, but only with a second controller and only if you picked a certain mode at the title screen - it was like he was a big secret. Like he was a cheat code. I know playing as Luigi was identical, but in the eyes of a child, he was better. He was special. He was a secret that I was in on.

Over the years, Luigi has continued to be my favorite Mario character and one of my favorite characters ever, possibly even my very favorite character of all time. And don't get me wrong; the last thing I want is for him to replace Mario. Because the reason I love Luigi so much is because he isn't Mario. Luigi would be nothing without Mario - and Mario would be nothing without Luigi. He's the most perfect sidekick character I can imagine - one who supports and highlights the best points of the star while never overshadowing them. He may be a coward, he may be a goofball, he may be lazy, he may even be a crossdresser or a compulsive liar, but he always stands up and does the right thing, for none of the acclaim or respect that Mario gets. Whatever game he finds himself in, Luigi is always funny and always a hero. The Year of Luigi may be over, but my respect and admiration for the man in green is endless!
