Oooh so cool! I really like the concept! Very unique and well done! And it's so cute how she's "tested" out each color on the pieces of paper!

Honestly, it's not very impressive. There are better pixel artists out there. It's not that great. There's messy lines up in her hair line and I don't even know what those brown and grey scribbles are.

I've probably commented on this at least twice before, but I'm glad it got featured (:

I see that some people don't want it as a DD and I understand why that might be; but people like that will probably be on almost every pixel-doll DD there is, despite there being a whole category just for them. But this is still great art, so no worries (:

I'm sorry but I'm going to write my long-ass opinion down if you don't mind. I'll try to make it less offensive.

Honestly, I don't get why this got in Daily Deviations, it's made on a base, and I think bases are for people who are lazy and think they make art. Of course there are people who kick ass at art and use bases but they shouldn't if they really kick ass. I've checked out your gallery just so that I wouldn't come over as a blind hypocrit and I have to say that you probably are able to make a masterpiece without using other people's textures or lineart.

Hm Well I enjoy using bases. They give me somthin small to do if i need a break from a project. They also have helped me get bettter at shading for my art. So not all people that do dolls are lazy.~

Finally someone who will state WHY they think something is undeserving of a DD instead of just saying "Why does crap like this have a DD?"

I hope you don't mind that I respond.

I too am a Dollist and Pixel artist. The thing that differs in the Dolling community is that we enjoy artistically collaborating with each other. It's often you'll find a base body that simply inspires you to do amazing things. Using another's base isn't being lazy at all. Dolling is an art within itself that many on the outside of the community fail to grasp. Dollist make bases for OTHER Dollist to use. This is how our community of artists was founded and how this art form came to be.

It's almost like calling a fashion designer lazy for using a Human form dummies to drape fabric on to create a piece of clothing. That's kind of what we do. We're Digital fashion and concept designers.

All in all, being a dollist has made me a better artist in all areas. I understand how folds of clothing need to be shaded, light and shadow, perspective, how to create depth in hair, the importance of negative space and most importantly how color has an impact on your final design.

Personally, I think the concept of this piece "Making Masterpiece" is wonderfully done. The use of Base (Which, even I have DD's on Bunnystick's bases, bases which have also won DD's in the past for being truly brilliant) is wonderfully executed. The idea that this is a self portrait is even more moving. She uses a dithering shading technique, which drives me batty, I personally hate dithering soooo much, but I do it. All in all, the concept and execution is well thought out and I think it is deserving of a DD because of concept alone.

Too bad most bases on this site are cheap anime trace overs.

Cherieosaurus In reply to AssClownFish [2010-03-30 05:02:53 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. I don't hunt for bases on DA though. Pixistar. com is a rather new site for base hunting, but other than going to artists sites individually and browsing their collections, a Base database/search engine is greater than that of DA.

I can see your point somewhat, kinda like gaia but actually creative lol

kinda like, how collage artists use stuff from media (idk how that'd work with copyright?) to make their art [link] is a great site to look at what I mean by that lol

but anyway, as far as I'm concerned, I'm a bit worried that this could be taken to a point (espeically with some of the ppl I've seen on the net and otherwise) where the only art some people DO are from bases, I can see MAKING the base, and making stuff from other bases, much like a fashion designer would make maniqins of their own and visa versa. But idk.

As open to interpretation as I am I still find it kinda iffy on the whole thing.

like all art I guess it's a matter of opinion right? lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cherieosaurus In reply to sagethethird [2010-03-30 05:21:40 +0000 UTC]

Indeed it is.

Even the dolling community in itself has issues with how different people operate too. There is the classic Pixel vs tooled (Photoshoped) war, there is the traced bases (Via google photo searchs) vs original war, then there is the whole anime base war and a lot of grey areas which the community as a whole disagree on.

For example, if I were to pixel the mona lisa by referencing the image, apparently that is okay, but if I pixel a less known image and I do a good job at re-creating it, then I'm instantly flamed for tracing or being uncreative or even infringing on someone's copyright.

I agree with you though. A lot of people in a lot of fields lack artistic identity and it bites them in the ass eventually.

GinkgoWerkstatt In reply to Invader-Demonix [2010-03-31 14:29:34 +0000 UTC]

This got a DD in the category "deviantID" it is totally unrelevant if there was a base used or not in that case.

And using a base for Pixel Art is like using stock pics for manipulations - and they will get DDs as well. Using a base helps to create a new piece of art, it doesn't make the artwork being anything "minor".

While I can see your point, is it really so horrible to give the artist hell about it? I mean, getting a DD over anything is a big deal to a lot of people and trying to dampen that happiness is really upseting. I don't want to source FAQs but you should really read them.

That being said, I think your concept is very clever and even though there is a base used, who cares? I think the concept itself deserves kudos.

Good day to you!

AssClownFish In reply to ArtByElizabethKeel [2010-03-30 04:35:07 +0000 UTC]

At the same time, is it fair to force everyone to agree? Getting a DD is almost synonymous with facing some sort of opinion from every different aspect.

GinkgoWerkstatt In reply to AssClownFish [2010-03-31 14:32:06 +0000 UTC]

It won't happen that everyone agrees with a DD, but it's just a matter of good behaviour to avoid comments like "why did this get a DD, it's not good"(or in a more rude way), because it's not the deviant who decides if they want this DD.

Everyone is free to say it's opinion but it can be done in a nicer way.

AssClownFish In reply to GinkgoWerkstatt [2010-04-01 03:40:11 +0000 UTC]

Oh don't get me wrong, I agree with that completely. But the painful fact is, a lot of people won't be nice. Jealousy is a big factor in a lot of this. When it comes to this kind of response, I often encourage the artist to be strong about it and ignore it. I've faced my share of criticism and I know sometimes people say things that can hurt, but it's not them [the jealous outsider] who is important, but the art being celebrated. I'll never get a DD so I guess I'm just talking from a long shot perspective. I guess in a way, it's a good thing I'm not a very talented artist

Sorry for the late reply, my message center got flooded by llamas

---

Yeah, sadly that is true. Although i don't understand that. I mean i can understand that everyone has a different idea of what is good and what is bad. But if they are hoping to get a DD, why not be happy that someone else got that chance as well?

Don't say that! A lot of people think that they will never get them, but often it just lacks people that are "brave" enough to suggest something.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AssClownFish In reply to GinkgoWerkstatt [2010-04-06 07:56:44 +0000 UTC]

Well, I often find I like the DD. Probably because I can see a little beauty in most everything.

:/ To be honest. I discourage even the concept of people nominating me. Seems silly, but I like being appreciated personally by the small number of people I know, then being thrown out to the wolves. But also... I have to have something that is actually artistically good in order to even qualify.
