Description
A unique sort of "hybrid battleship" combining features of a battleship and aircraft carrier, Ise initially was built as a version of the preceding Fuso-class. Extensive reconstruction occurred in 1940, in which some of the main battery turrets were replaced with a flight deck and hangar.
Ise is named for one of Japan's historic provinces where the Ise Grand Shrine, one of the most sacred sites of the Shinto religion, is located.
