it's mainly because due to the way the first season ended, Asami is basically turned into a non-essential character. yea, you could still keep her around, but they weren't given the time to develop the LoK characters well enough, so she's just there now.

that would be poor writing. dyou go clear-cut a forest just because of a bad interaction with a tree-hugger/hippy?
she'll either be put on the back burner and not given much air time, or she'll be around, but be generally hostile to Korra and Mako.
i can see her taking over her father's business and supplying tech and support to the police force. that'd be cool...
