Judging from the NCC-1900 registry, it's a fair bet this class wasn't introduced untill the 2270's or 80's. (TMP era) In fact, I do believe that date range is canon.
This is good fun though. I've seen the Defiant Class done in TOS style.

Has anyone managed to rectify the possible incongruities between current Star Trek "technology" where warp engines work in unison and phase between one another, and the post Classic Trek "Franz Joseph" era depicting signal warp engine vessels and triple engine ships that might seem to challenge the concept?

One nacelle is enough for a Warp field, two is the optional, three is good for large ships, four is good for long distances at high Warp.

Well, they never worked for the Constellation - still 23rd century tech remember. The Prometheus was modular, with a far more sophisticated warp core assembly and the product of immensely more advanced baseline tech to start with. According to Tech Manuals, the Constellation could never fully power all four of its nacelles, and was tuned to only use two of them. The Prometheus might do the same, only using the dorsal assembly while the ventral nacelles simply help vent and cool the warp plasma. And, when the multi-vector assault mode is active, the THREE pairs of nacelles (one set of which nests into the saucer) are all powered independently.
Other technical sources indicate that increasing the number of individual warp coil assemblies can exponentially increase the demand for power.

Actually according to the deck by deck schematics of the Prometheus, it actually has multiple warp cores, thus they could all be powered. Remember, it's capable of splitting into 3 warp capable ships
Additionally, at least in Nemesis Era Trek (and we're not counting Non-Canon Star Trek Online), the Prometheus Class is considered to be the fastest ship in Starfleet, no other ship could catch up to it.
Hmmmm, I wonder why? could it be those 4 engines (Make it 5 if you extend the upper primary hull engine for a little extra speed boost)
