Description Back when I first decided to try selling at a convention, I drew a feathercats series to make into prints and stickers. I could only muster the motivation to do the characters... decent backgrounds were beyond my ability, both energy-wise and technical-skill-wise. But instead of despairing and scrapping them because I couldn't make them as nice as I hoped, I went ahead and made prints of them anyway, simplistic backgrounds and all... and people still loved them! It taught me a lot about toxic perfectionism and the value of "good enough."

I now have both increased motivation and increased technical skill, so I'm going back and sprucing up the backgrounds on the feathercats. The eagret is my personal favorite out of the bunch!

I really love this <3 Do you think you would ever do a short tutorial on how you make these small backgrounds? Or how you learned? It's something I struggle with a lot

LATE REPLY SORRY...Β
This background was mostly done with watercolor Photoshop brushes! The one I used for this background was from GrutBrushes.com... I THINK it was Wain Riff but I can't remember 100%. I just slapped on the color in a solid blue wash, then applied a clipping mask (to lock the opacity) and went over it with a green brush to make the grass.

I super feel you on the struggle, I still am very unconfident about doing backgrounds and they're always intimidating.

This is beautiful! How did you do the paint strokes for the grass? I wish to learn new techniques and that one is gorgeous!

Thank you!! I used a Paint Tool SAI acrylic brush and just made short brush strokes, blocking in the grass in a flat color, then I locked the opacity, zoomed in, and painted on the details. The grass is in 2 layers, one behind the griffin and one in front. Then I used a photoshop watercolor brush (I think from grutbrushes.com) to kind of fade out the bottom. When all else fails use lots of layers and clipping masks haha

Glad you have liked it! I detailed my game plan for Alterity in this journal: tl;dr I plan to finish out the scene next month and then shelve it until I have more time to work on it.

Thanks! Glad you like the lines. Line variation is an amazingly complex art and I'm always trying to get better at it.
