AaaaH OH MY GOODNESS SO CUUUUTEEEE!!! This is amazing, your way of painting fur is among the best I've ever seen, it's so realistic!!! I actually thought it was a photo at first!

AHHH SENPAI NOTICED ME!!! ; w; What a glorious day hnnnn.
Thank you so much!! Animal portraits are more forgiving imo though. Human portraits on the other hand, those are extremely hard for me; and yours are all so amaziiing!!!
I honestly like to learn from your gallery -- it's very inspiring. Also, Benedict Cumberbatch hehe, heh, Β  Β

ARE YOU KIDDING ME I'M FANGIRLING SO HARD RIGHT NOW OMFG.
Eh, I guess it depends on what you're more practiced in, if I tried to make an animal drawing as amazing as this I would just crash and burn!
Gaaaah, I'm blushing so hard right now. But honestly, you're just as inspiring, might I ask how long it takes you to finish something this detailed? o3o

You are too kind. ;w;
IIRC, this took me about 8 hours or so. The trick is to use the smallest size of soft brush for the fur.
When I try painting humans though, I fail miserably. Last time I tried doing a photo study (which was about around the time when I did this panda), 20 hrs+ and still no decent face. The colours always look off. Skin is simply too hard to paint with all the mixing and blending lol.

Now I just try and draw quickly so wont waste too much time and see which parts need improvement. Then I start again and apply what I discovered from the previous one. Hopefully I'll get there. If you have any pointers that would help, I would be so grateful. The way you paint skin looks on point always!!! How do you even achieve that kind of effect.

Anyway, thank you for your time Your comments made my day.

Wait whaaaat? Holy heck, that is incredibly fast! O_O

Hmm, well I'm not too sure about colors, as it's still an ongoing battle for me to figure them out, but something that really helped me spice up my skin tones is this; gurneyjourney.blogspot.bg/2008… I hope it helps you too! Though I think that your colors are incredibly colorful and fun already. Seriously, how do you get them that whimsical and happy? That has always been a struggle of mine.
But one thing that my brother taught me as I was first starting out with portraits is; TEXTURES. One drawback of digital art is that it's too smooth which ends up being super unrealistic for skin. I was a bit doubtful at first but once I tried adding even a bit of texture, even if it's not too noticeable, it makes a big difference. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any skin brushes that do that magically so I start by blocking in all the big areas with a textured brush, and then I go in with a super tiny soft brush and add in tons of tiny details and refining everywhere. Probably not the most optimal way to go about things as it also takes me 20+ hours sometimes, but eh. XD Do you have any textured brushes that might help with that?

Thank YOU! I love nothing more than striking up conversations with fellow awesome artists! I'm sorry for the text wall though. D:

Mewlish In reply to AndromedaDualitas [2017-12-06 09:46:22 +0000 UTC]

Really?! I guess I just used to compare the time I spent to Spitpainters. Not sure if you've heard of those. Β

Heyy omigod. That srsly helped!! I gave it another shot and it definitely made the difference. I'm honestly close to tears as I already see a difference from my last!!! I'll prolly post it soon. Thank you so much You explained it so well!!! I have some textured brushes that's included in the app I use. Btw. that's the same thing with how I work on fur, I start with a big blob of soft brush for big areas, then go small when adding the details.

Regarding colours, I try to experiment a lot. lol. Some days, I use a lot of pastels and tints, sometimes I like them vivid and saturated. I tend to use a lot of light colours in general though. When they're too bright, I add a bit of grey in the colour wheel to balance. Buut of course that's just me. You have way better understanding and application of colour theory than I do, as seen in your amazing gallery. Yours are more realistic too and sometimes I want that. I just can't seem to match those colours well.

Alsoo, likewise! Not to worry about the wall of text, I enjoy reading them very much and it makes me happy that I can chat with someone who's as enthusiastic.

Hnnnngh. So sorry for the mega late reply. DX Didn't have much time for epic text walls these past few days.

Uhhh... Spitpainters? Did you maybe mean speedpainters? Because I definetly used to compare myself to them and feel pretty bad, but then I watched a super enlightening video somewhere about how speed isn't all that important, and I'm naturally getting faster as I get better. And besides, c'mon. 8 hrs is completely normal and reasonable compared to my 20+ sometimes hours, especially for something so detailed. My fastest record yet is 5 hrs, that is heckin turbo mode compared to my usual speed and it's still pretty long.
Yay!!! I'm so glad I could help! 8'D
Yep! That's a good tactic, only with skin it's best to start with a big textured blog instead of a soft one, as that will make it a lot easier in that you won't have to render out every individual pore later.

Ooh, that is cool! Actually gives me some ideas to experiment too! Thanks so much!
Oh, trust me, I have absolutely NO idea what I'm doing when it comes to color. XD I'm just winging it most of the time.
But I guess it's like an artist curse or something to what to do everything besides what you can already do, like I for one would LOVE to be able to do vivid and cheerful colors like yours, (and I've always wanted to try something more pastel, but I can never resist adding a lot of contrast. DX How do you do it? Resisting, I mean?) but they always end up getting more realistic and dark/contrasted and etc... But hey, on the bright side, we'd have no reason to improve and try new things without that curse! So no worries, I'm sure you'll be making mega realistic colors in no time!

Yay! Glad to hear that! I'm the same, but I'm also a bit self conscious about trying to not scare people away by drowning them with huge text walls.

It's fiine, don't worry about late replies! I know you must be pretty busy irl and with real stuff going on -- I completely understand, so there's no need to rush!

Yees it is generally speedpainting but there are certain rules. Spitpaint is an exercise/practice that you can do everyday wherein there's a given topic and you'll have to work on it for 30 mins max without any reference. I was truly amazed at how they come up with those detailed works in that limited time. They say it helps artists improve when it comes to concept art and composition in general~ xD I wouldn't know though, because I have yet to produce a decent output in 30mins.

Β  Β

Aww that's nice of you to share, that's actually my next goal and I will def take your advice and try and add more hours to my works! Yours look so professional and clean! I think the added time is worth it if it means getting better and having a more polished piece. Speed will come in after in the long run yaa. Your 5-hour record is a testament to it lol.

Regarding your question, there's no resistance at all. huu. I think I have a dark-palette inhibition (unless there's a photo ref involved) and I don't use them much. I think I just generally like vivid/pastel colours so it naturally shows. Mm if you wanna try something brighter, maybe you can look at game art or covers? I sometimes take inspiration from those~ Alsooo, mobile app games! I noticed that their palettes tend to be brighter too and less contrasted. Maybe that can help with your experimenting. tihee.

Anywaay, I've already snatched so much of your time! I'm so sorryy!! And thank you so much for everything, friend.
I hope you're having a lovely week so far.

AndromedaDualitas In reply to Mewlish [2017-12-24 08:53:02 +0000 UTC]

Phew, thank you for understanding! But also sorry again. T__T I'm pretty busy with trying to wrap everything up before the new year, but this is just frigging embarrassing I'msosorryuuuugh.

Woooow, I did NOT know that, first of all, thank you for teaching me something new, but second of all that is really cool!
This was actually a practice I did once, like 30 min portraits or whatever with both reference and no reference to help me with my speed, but I had no idea it was an actual thing that didn't come from my brain, I'll have to check out some examples of how the pros do it! *grabs a hot cocoa and a blanket and gets ready to have her self-esteem ruined*

Hey, you don't HAVE to, your works look incredibly polished already, hence my surprise at how little time it takes you. Patience is certainly helpful, but I imagine that just as my speed improves with time, your cleanliness and details will also improve in time with not much sacrifice to speed... Not sure if that made any sense... D:
20 hours is also not that bad for me, considering that a few years ago it would take me up to a full month to finish a single piece, so I would say I'm not doing that bad now-a-days, and it should only get faster.

Hehe, yeah, the opposite is true for me. Man it's so cool how stuff like that shows trough in style and everything. <3
Oooh, yeah! I have noticed that apps and games tend to do that but I've never thought to try and take inspiration from that. Thanks so much for the advice!

Noooo, don't apologize! I love chatting! I'm just sorry again for the incredibly embarrassing time it took me to respond uuugh. I feel terrible. >.<
Thank you so much too for your epic niceness and patience! I hope you had a great week too, and may you have the bestest of happy holidays!

Aww! so cute! It looks great, almost like a photo. The only suggestion I would give would be maybe make the definition in his face a bit more even. For instance the nose, teeth, and right side all look much less defined than the eyes or left side. A blow out by the sun could account for the blur on the right side, but in that case I would brighten it a tad to make that come across. Still, very beautiful work!

Very nice piece. Well done on the fur and eyes! It really looks like it's looking at me

A bit of feedback: I'd say it's a bit hard to tell if the panda is resting its head on a branch or if that's a leaf in the foreground close to the camera. The panda seems to overlap the object. If it is indeed resting its head on a branch then the branch shouldn't be so blurry, as it's the same distance away from the panda so should be in the same focus.

Hope that helps!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mewlish In reply to BrianJMurphy [2013-07-11 05:18:41 +0000 UTC]

Oh my. Finally. I've been waiting for so long for this kind of feedback. THANK YOU!

Mmmm well there's the branch on the left which is the same distance away with the panda. And there's the other branch with the leaves which is closer to the camera. I will try redoing the branch closer to the cam then. Now that you've said it, the panda does seem to overlap the foreground.

Your comment helped a lot, really. I appreciate it.
Have a great day.
