Took forever to finish. >.<
*This* was my first ever doodle of Dick AND of Bat. I worked on and off on it for a long while, but I was never satisfied with the details.

What I do like in this one, is the symbolism.
Dick's shadow is Batman's shadow because Dick lives in that shadow. He thrived in it. The bat is what Nightwing's destined to become (and later became, when Bruce was displaced in time). But I chose to draw the shadow back-to-back with Dick, because Batman isn't merely a dark shadow looming behind Dick. He's someone that's always been at his back - fighting back to back with him.

[EDIT] = Oh... oh, WOW. Just... just WOW. I can't believe I got a daily deviation; I would've never, ever thought it'd happen for real, but here it is!

Wow. This is fantastic. The composition of the piece is wonderful, and it's also pretty much exactly the features I tend to picture Dick as having after all the different art styles in various books are said and done. So beautifully drawn...

Daily Deviation very well deserved! Kudos to you! This piece is amazing! The detail work, the expression on Dick's face, the very well defined and proportionate musculature figure of him (omg, drool...) THE COLORS, the message....ah! So amazing! And you're right, many Robins have come and gone but the bond these two as the Dynamic Duo shared can't be replaced. They are the dynamic duo.

Now, if you'll excuse me I'll go and gush some more over this piece for a while.

Not to be picky (and I know shadows tend to stretch and get bigger, blah blah blah) but when Dick was Robin he was still in his teens and still growing. But when he became Nightwing, he was well into his 20's and no longer growing (I believe he stopped at around 5'11" - 6'1") while Bruce/Batman was 6'3". So the fact that the Bat shadow is a whole head+shoulders taller then Nightwing seems a little off (but like i said, shadows blah blah blah).

I'm not 100% satisfied with the shadow either, and I want to thank you for the comment pointing out what you don't like about this picture. ^_^

I struggled a lot with the shadow's size before settling on this one. I wanted, needed Batman to be bigger than Nightwing (again, to infuse subtle meaning to the pic... such as how the "icon" tends to be larger-than-life, larger than the man, even; how Batman's shadow looms, but also envelops Dick, etc.); but blowing it too much made it look like Dick was in danger/about to be swallowed and that's not the message I wanted to convey. Normal-sized shadow didn't work for me either, so in the end I settled for this only-slightly-larger-than-it-should-be shadow.

I'm so utterly and completely *stunned*!
At first I hadn't even realized what was happening; I saw the hits, favs and comments on this fic raise, and I was pleasantly surprised, if a bit confused. Then I started to get comments congratulating me about the DD, and I... I think I squealed out loud.
I couldn't believe it! I was so incredibly excited (I still am ♥)

hey like the old saying; like father like son. This would have been a perfect cover for battle for the cowl seeing he finally claimed his birth right. If you like batman beyond (I know I do) I'd like to think after bruce retires dick takes over for a while.
