Known as Al-Imam Al–Akbar (The Great Teacher), Al-Darani was an early Sufi mystic who lived during the Umayyad Period 758 ACE – 830 ACE.
The Imam is originally from a South Arabian tribe and was associated with a famous Sufi colony near Bostra (in Syria). He later lived in a village outside of Damascus and gathered a following.
One of his main principles was the advocacy of the renunciation of mortal desires like food and money. He also advocated that death should not be sought after and that real Jihad is one in which a person fights their own ego and desires.
