Description Be prepared for a slew o' these ;;-w-

So for our lit class, we were assigned to do a creative response to the novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Good read, peeps, check it out sometime. Anyway, our group chose to do a representation of the stages of ... de-innocent-ization?... an individual such as Kurtz or Marlow or any other civilized European shmuck goes through as they travel further into Africa. We did this by painting ourselves all pretty-like!

The series begins with the subject painted completely white, within the confines of culture and society and untouched by the influence of the 'dark continent'. It moves through several stages, each more 'tainted' than the last, which we showed using the addition of more and more color to the subject's body (as opposed to shades of gray, which wouldn't have communicated the theme of wilderness as well). We also relied on surroundings to communicate the subject's progress (indoors, outdoors, in between). The series finally ends up with a completely black-painted subject, showing their eventual submission to the daaaahkness.

Another sideways one. The gods be cursed...
